In a couple of months, I'll be installing a 4 1/2" tall cowl induction scoop on my 78. This will be functional and also be used to clear my spacer/carb/filter combo (1" open spacer, Predator carb, 6" tall K&N) This combo, along with the Stealth intake, puts the top of the filter 3" out of the hood.
Originally posted by Torque1st A lot of hood scoops faced backwards to take advantage of that high pressure air zone in front of the windshield. It would keep more rain etc out.
I always wondered how those worked. With all the air coming in the through grille, you'd think they would actually suck the air out of the carb. I suppose you'd have to seal the hole in the hood to the air cleaner to prevent a syphon of sorts.
I really prefer the rear facing scoops. Mainly because of their looks and because I love mud/water holes.
Mike,
Did you find a cowl induction scoop already? If so, where??
The reason I want one for looks is because I really dont want to cut a hole in my hood, I guess after spending two years restoring my truck I dont really want to put holes in it. I've been thinking about getting a Cobra Jet fiberglass hood scoop from JC Whitney.
How do you plan to mount it though? I suppose you could stick it on with tape, but I'd be a bit leary of going over 30 mph. Your only other options would be rivets or screws which mean holes.
If you're that concerned, go to a boneyard and get another hood. Put the scoop on the spare hood, cut the hole and have it finished to match the truck.
Kjkozak2 thanks for the idea but I think I might just go with screws even though it will involve holes there still wont be one big hole in my hood. I thought about getting another hood and doing it that way but I'll be short on money this summer due to some flames, and im totally redoing my engine.
I too like the look of the Cobra style scoop on the 73 - 79 F series hoods.
Several years back, to satisfy my curiousity, I strategically placed/taped about a dozen strips of shop rag on my hood to see how the air flowed over it while driving.
I even taped the strips about an 1 1/2" above the center of the hood, where the scoop most likely would go, and the results convinced me otherwise.
As I remember, the air didn't seem to rush into the middle of the hood while it did look promising for a cowl induction scoop.
I wound up doing the double snorkle thing and it worked pretty well.
That's very interesting. Assuming your dual snorkel gets air through the rad. support (i.e. through the grille), it's probably the best place to capture the most air.
In my case, my grille is often into or under water so I'm gonna have to go higher.
Back to the original poster's question, i did a search on ebay motors for hood scoops and found LOTS of them. Most are for ricers, but they do have several larger ones. I kinda like the 30"x40"x5" high rear facing ones.
I've looked into those scoops on ebay, and they aren't too bad of a deal. They do need finish work, like sanding and trimming to fit, but that isn't a big deal. I think I'm going to go with a steel scoop and weld it to the hood. I believe cowl scoops look good on these trucks.
I ordered a 4" cowl, front latching fiberglass hood this afternoon from Unlimited Products out of Southern California. It takes approx. 4-5 weeks to build and another week for shipping. So should receive it some time in April. You can order a 4",4 3/4", 6", 7" or 9" cowl fiberglass hood from them, priced according to size of cowl and whether or not you want the pin style or the front latching style. Obviously by looking at my gallery, I have the time to wait for the hood:-)
On a side note, I got ahold of 2 NOS doors and 2 NOS front fenders last week. Finally in the right place at the right time
Take Care

Yes, the steel ones are nice. This month's Rod'n'Custom mag has an article on how to make your own steel bead, so you can make a "factory scoop" and match the hood bead from top to bottom. I'll probably start mine next month....
I had a 4" Harwood Cowl from summit done into my hood and it looks awesome. Im not going to cut the hood because I dont want to loose the integerity of the hood im just going to use a hole saw to put a few holes in it to vent out some heat. I had mine done by a provessional (a good friend now because I traded him some parts to do the body work on my truck) and we used an air riviter with decent sized rivits about every 3 inches on the sides and the front. When he got done glassing it in and working his magic it looks like it came from the factory that way. The body line of the hood and scoop line realy well and that scoop is realy well made.
