Rattleling sound

This one has be stumped, My 2000 f-250 SD started to make a rattleing sound only when I take off in 1st gear, if I take off hard no noise if I ease off the clutch then it sounds like I am draging a box of nails, could this be something loose in the transmission or is it just common sounds of diesel trucks.

(My truck: 2000 f-250 SD 4x4, 7.3 TD, 5 speed manual with 100,000 miles)

I assume you meant 6 speed manual.

You are probably about to lose a spring in the clutch plate. I would pull the tranny to investigate ASAP.

it has six foward gears if you count "low" as a gear than yes. there is also some fluid on the transmission case it is pretty clear and smells like fuel.

Yeah, I count them all . It is, after all, a ZF-6 transmission.

Your fuel leak is probably (possibly) one of the feed lines on the back of the heads. You may have soaked your clutch disk, is it slipping? and I suppose it could be making it chatter. Either way, the clutch will likely not recover.

It is far more likely to be a clutch problem as opposed to a tranny problem, and it is a very expensive tranny, so I hope it's the clutch.

Thanks guys, I took a closer look and found a puddle of fuel on top of the engine, I take it that the fuel pump is that round disk object and I think it has sprung a leak. I take it fuel can leak down the block and get into the clutch that is going to be pricey can I change my fuel pump and my clutch if it is all of this my self
or is it a mechanic lucky day. Brandon

If you are talking about the round canister on top of the engine, that is your fuel filter/water separator. Yes it can leak down the back of the engine.

powerstroke250 is that something do-it-yourself or more in depth. So the noise Im hearing means the clutch is probley on its way out, there seems to be no slipping so I dont know.

Where exactly is it leaking from the fuel filter? If it is the cap, it may just be loose or the bevel gasket has gone bad. Maybe a loose fuel line?

My goog friend has the 99 PSD w/6 speed manual trans. And he has gone through 2 clutches so far (199k miles). This last one he put in he was told that ford "has or had" a problem with the clutch on the PSD. if you buy the aftermarket clutch this should help, they have fix what ford could not with this clutch.
Hope this helps.

Thank you IowaF250 I will keep that in mind if it is indeed my clutch, witch I hope it is not....Just a side not for any one reading this post, I am looking for a technical book that shows everything about my truck like a Haynes manual. I have looked everywhere in this small town but no luck, if anyone knows a good website or book store please let me know. Thanks to everyone who keeps this site going. It answers a lot of my question.

well found out it is the fuel filter cover, I dont know how to change it it seems like it is just a gasket. The local shop looked at it and said they could not do it takes a special tool, is this true do I really have to go to a dealer.

The round black top just screws on.I take it off usually by hand. There is a tool but you can use an oil filter wrench turn it counterclockwise.

The 99 and up trucks use a single mass flywheel. Except for the 2003.25+, the 6.0 uses a DMF.
