I don't know about any of you, but when I go to the grocery store I am pretty clueless as in what to buy. Since certain types of MSG cause me health issues, I have to take the time to read labels before purchasing something different from my usual diet. The big problem with grocery shopping is that types of MSG have really limited my shopping list. Also, the fact that I'm trying to eat healthier forces me to chose healthier foods and not come home with a handfull of candy bars.
I usually get the basics for breakfast and work: cereal, bread, sandwich meat, etc., but when it comes to supper or snacks I'm just lost. So many things at the store are either too expensive or unhealthy. I really don't like the grocery store anymore.
I just send my wife.she knows all about those things.I know I eat a lot of fruit and veggies.I eat a lot of moose and deer meat which is quite lean also.
We have a Bread and Circus whole foods market relatively close to us. http://www.breadandcircus.com/ They are a high end natural and organic store. I dont know how I shopped before I found this place.
A good tip I was given is to shop only around the outside edge of the store, not the isles in the middle. The isles are where you'll find all the pre-packed junk with preservatives. Outside edge always has produce, meats, etc. This country has gone CRAZY with convenience foods. Produce is a minority in our stores. If you stick to clean, natural foods for a little while the other junk doesn't even seem that appealing. I guess you kind of have to wean yourself off it.
I do all the cooking in this house, I pretty much stick to healthy foods by my standards, not just the food guide. A well balanced diet and varying intakes of veggies and stuff. Oddly enough, my mom usually complains that the stuff I make is too complicated. I try to integrate wild game, and have nearly cut beef out of my diet (odd for a cattle ranching family huh?). I don't have a lot of room to grow my own veggies, but I stay away from hydroponic stuff. I take great pride in cooking, and I haven't made anyone sick yet.
Well, around where I live there are a couple stores called Trader Joe's, they specialize in health/organic foods. Not sure if they have any locations outside of california though.
I just drive the cart and carry the bags, my wife is the brains behind the operation. But I'm with you, being diabetic I need to watch everything for hidden sugars and such. Luckily i am married to a great woman who takes care of me.
If you can not have MSG, I guess that counts out Pringles and Pepperoni! Those two products are loaded with the stuff.
>sandwich meat
Worse type of meat you can usually buy! Usually nothing healthy with that and a lot of it is loaded with corn syrup. If you want quick meat, get shaved roast beef or whole cooked chickens. Rip the chicken yourself and mix with Miracle Whip, sort of like making tuna. That makes a nice sandwich.
Buy a few "basic" Italian cook books and learn how to cook. Usually fairly simple and tasty. Plus, you can learn how to make your own bread, pizza dough, etc.
Except for pasta and ice cream, I usually try to make everything myself from the "raw" materials. Only time we buy bread is when I have not had time to make it. I even make my own pancake mix. It ends up being a lot cheaper and better tasting then buying the store stuff.
Learn how to make a good beef stew, because you can freeze it and spread out good meat over a period of three to four weeks.
If you have a friend who's mother is a very good cook, ask her to help teach you how to cook. I had a friend who make excellent tamales, wrapped in bananna leaves and everything. Then he married a South American girl, hers were even better!
Here is something very simple to make, rice!
2 cups of rice
2 tablespoons of olive oil
mix in some tiny amounts of Thyme, Parsley, Garlic, Cilantro
four cups of chicken broth (I use Knox cubes)
Microwave 25 minutes, stir at 15 minutes
I've been eating a lot of salads lately.
My g/f (being pregnant) craves those.
She doesn't eat much beef either, never has.
So when we do go out to eat, we usually eat healthy.
I started eating basically what she eats, just out of "easiness" for us to get the same thing.
As for the house, I eat salad, or a sandwich. I try to stay away from breads.
.............When your touring around the grocery store, hang around the dessert section and concentrate on Blonds, Brunette's, and Redheads. They don't have any MSG and they are very digestable. Oh, no matter how many times you get sumthin cookin' in the Kitchen they won't make you put on any weight. They will make your heart rate increse !! s.kuteman
