My F350 V10/auto should be here in a few weeks. I've read posts on some other sites that state the auto tranny tends to run hot. Since I will be towing an 8,000Lb trailer over a number of mountain passes (12,000 ft.) does this tranny need more fluid capacity? B&M sells a deeper pan that will add 3qts of fluid capacity and I've added external spin on tranny filters that add about a qt of fluid capacity. My old chevy TH400 lived a long and happy life this way. Is this a good idea for the ford??
I didn't think that the tranny tends to run hot, bacause you have do have a tranny cooler. I tow a 8000lb trailer with my Excrusion and have had no problems. However, anytime you can add more fluid plus a spin on filter is a good thing no matter what.
BTW, you can lower your tranny temp by removing or fabricating a new bracket for the front license plate. It disrupts good airflow. Do a search, there was a subject about it last week.
I saw the post regarding the front plate. Not a good thing to have happen. I will do something about mine when it gets here.
I haven't seen any one post actual trans temps just a lot of "opinions". I tend to be a little on the paranoid side and this will be the first new truck that I've owned. I also keep vehicles forever if they are reliable hence the concern about the trans cooler now. Do you have a temp gauge on your trans?? If so what temps do you run?? At what elevation do you tow? I will be on stretches where the throttle is wide open for 20-30 minutes at a shot.
Don't know of any floor mounts but there are a-piller mounts. Auto meter is a good unit. I mounted my guage just to the right of the steering column in the lower dash. Looks great. You may or may not like this location because there is a small window through the wheel and gear shifter to see the guage. B&M pan is a good upgrade. Mag-Hytec also makes one with even more capacity. Of course it is more $$ too. My highest temps have been 185-195 range towing my 28 foot TT in the mountains leaving the AZ desert. In daily driving during the summer it averages 160 or so. Otherwise it hardly ever goes over 140.
Thanks for the temps! Do you have the deep trans pan?? If so which one? I'm guessing that your trailer is pushing 8,000Lbs from your post. I've driven the interstate out of Phoenix to Flagstaff and it is a long grade. Lots of overheated vehicles on the side of the road.
I'd be happy if it never got warmer than 195. My TH400 never got over 185 while towing. This really helps the thing live a long and happy life.
I have the regular pan. Temp sender is in the test port on the side of the tranny. I don't get on I17 too often. Mostly Hwy 87 and 260 to the White Mountains. My trailer is a 28 footer prolly weighing 7000lbs. or so.
Let me tell you about my Truck. It is a 2000 Crew Cab 4x4 diesel I have a transfer tank 97gals and tow a goose neck horse trailer 6 horse. when fully loaded I weight in at 23000lbs. I have over 100000 miles on Ori Auto Trans Have it serviced every 40000miles and have upgraded the engine to over 300hp and I have all the gauges trans never got above 230temp. I live in Oregon and have travel the 11 western state including Canada. The factory cool is very good I would not waste your money.
PS The trans will run hotter in 4x4 but not that hot.

good to hear that your trans has lived over 100,000 miles. I really don't want the trans temp over 195* though. When you get past that temp bad things start to happen. 230* is really hot! How often does yours get that hot?? I've seen trannies go up in smoke shortly after getting to 230* though most of those have been GM light duty ODs.
