Are the transmission deep pans really worthwhile for transmission cooling? I have found a B&M deep pan that should fit my '92 E150, cost is around $150. So far haven't found other pans, such as derale or summit, listed as fitting this transmission, 4 spd Ford AOD. I was looking for extra capacity, and using synthetic fluid to run cooler. I already have tranny cooler (in radiator and separate cooler), but want to maximize protection while pulling a travel trailer in summer. Just wondering if $150 for deep pan plus synthetic fluid is worthwhile. I have tried the whitney, summitracing and carparts sites-only pan I see that fits is B&M.

Sounds like over kill to me...if your really worried about it just add an additional tranny cooler or change your present one out for a bigger one. To put your mind at ease, add a tranny fluid temp gauge. Deen

I agree with Deen. It is overkill. Install a trans temp gauge and modify the system accordingly. A $20 cooler will do more than just about anything to keep it cool. The gauge may show you that there is nothing else you need to do.

Thanks. The temp gage makes sense. Where is the temperature sensor normally mounted for tranny temp? Would I need to mount it on the pan, drill and tap?

You'd be better off to spend your money on a good shift kit. It will take the slopiness out of the shifts, giving better shift firmness, which should extend the tranny's life. Transco and B&M both make kits for the AOD. price is probably under $150.
