I recently bought a "99", F250SD, 7.3 diesel, auto/od-trans, 4x4. Six weeks later, while driving the kids to school, I noticed a slight vibration, felt like the rear of the truck, not in the steering. Due to the coming holidays (mid December), and the work load of my normal mechanic, I was forced to do some troubleshooting myself. The tires were balanced, and the u-joints were replaced from the trans output shaft back to the diff....the vibration was still there. Took the truck to a Ford dealer service shop. They replaced the hubs on both sides, charged me $500, and said "Fixed!" A week later I noticed the drivers hub was in the "Lock" position, no big deal, I switched it back to "Auto", vibration returned. With the switch in 2HI and hubs in Auto I have intermittent vibration. With switch in 2HI and hubs in Lock I have no vibration. Anyone ever heard of or had this problem? Any ideas on where to look? The Ford shop is still looking, but I think they are shot-gunning.
Have you done any moods to the suspension. With most superduty lifts and even some stock superdutys with the lager blocks in the rear the carrier bearing needs to be lowered to get the right angle for the drive shaft. Use a magnetic level to get the two piece drive shafts to have the same angle. Good luck.
Thanks for the reply, but I don't think the trouble is in the rear any more, simply because when the front drivers side hub is in the lock position, there is no vibration, when it is in the auto position the vibration is present. Have you ever heard of anyone switching the auto hub to a manual hub setup??
I have a 99 (not that the years matters) that had the same problem. I also have the ESO front end, which was the root of problem. The left hub was blown out causing it to vribrate as you say. Soon that hub failed to work at all, the dealer replaced it under warrenty. I now lock the hubs before leaving if I think I may need 4x4. I can then shift transmission in and out without worrying about the hubs.
I'm going to take a wild stab at this, it could be one of MANY things....
What kind of shape are the bearings in? Have you tried "lubrication therapy" to see if it has any effect (not say this is the cure but it might help track the problem down)....
You might want to check your ball joints. My brother has a 99F2504X4V10 (50,000miles)that had the same problem. He replaced the ujoints and tires and nothing fixed the problem. I can't believe they would go bad with low mileage, but he jacked it up and wobbled the tires and they were real loose. New joints fixed his vibration. Now all he needs is a steering stabilizer because the old one is leaking all the oil out of it and a new power steering pump(old one is leaking). This truck was not abused, but was used to tow a horse trailer.
350r, years DO matter. Early 99's had a major problem with axel to hubs. First trucks of a totally new design in a new model year. We wound up being the sounding board on everything they screwed up on. You think model year doesn't matter? How does having your truck in the dealer one day a week for 8 months sound? Not counting the regular bull? Anyone else with a 2000 or or
01 or 02 have this problem? I thought not! 99's stink! Can't wait to dump mine for an 02 coming in March. Christ, my dealer of 15 years won't even take it as a trade because of the repair history. You got a 99? Light a match and forget it! Trimman
You don't have loaded weapons in your vehicle do ya? If you knew the fact about first model year flaws then why did you buy one :-X11 Try having the vehicle run on a lift with the hubs lock and unlocked to see where the vibration is originating no sense in guessing, parts and labor is to expensive.Good luck
