DOES Anyone .... make a steering gear box rebuild kit for a 79 4x4 f150 that includes the gears, bearings, seals and every thing else to make mine knew again? ive looked and havent had any luck. maybe one of yall can help. mine is sloppy as greased goose crud. and doesnt have any adjustment left..
torque1st , i know i can buy a rebuilt box ,ive been looking for 2 months and the cheapest i can find is around 190 bucks. i dont know about where you live but money trees dont grow in texas. at least not in my part. besides i like to do as much of the wrench turning as i can, thats the fun of having an older truck. at least it is for me any way.
torque1st. i didnt mean for that to read as spiteful as it did, so i will say im sorry, and hope there is no bad vibes.. we are all here cause we love our trucks right.
Shane74, Look up West Texas off Road on any search engine and they will rebuild yours if you send it to them for 100.00 plus shipping. They have mine as we speak or type. Hope this helps.
The problem with doing it yourself is having the knowledge to determine if a part is bad or not. You and I might look at the sector gear and think it looks OK while an experienced rebuilder would know that it is shot. Of course some of the rebuilders would re-use it anyway but that is another problem. Rebuilders have special tools and equipment. They also have special replacement parts that can be used when a shaft or housing has to be re-ground and the stock size seals and bearings no longer fit. It is great to wrench on our own truck but it is better to keep within our skill levels and restrict our wrenching to replacement of assy's sometimes.
I just replaced my steering gear box. I found one at a special truck wrecking yard south of town for around $70-90, but I ended up going with a reman. one from Autozone for around $120. All cases had a core charge of over a hundred bucks so bring your old one with you. The 4x4 boxes are like gold around here and hard to find.
