Angry Transmission jerk!!!!

I am worried what my 2000 Expedition is been doing lately.Everytime I take off, the car jerks when it switches from first gear to the next. All the other gears are fine. This is my first time owning a Ford. I bought this used. Do I need to worry about my transmission going out on me. What should I do? I need help. I can't afford to get a new transmission. Open for anything.

Hi and welcome. How many miles on your truck?

What you describe doesn't sound good, although I'm not much of a transmission guy. If I were having the same problem, I'd ask friends, coworkers, etc. who they've use and trust in the transmission business and/or start calling shops and describing what your symptoms are. Nine out of 10 shops will tell you that you must bring it in for a diagnosis and will then most likely try to convince you to rebuild, but there should be one shop with a guy who really knows trannies and will be able to tell you, "yeah, that's your thing-a-ma-jiggy going out/slipping...." More than likely that's the guy you want working on your vehicle.

Jaytarub, no need to freak out just yet. These trannies are sensitive but they rarely just crap the bed. The symptoms you're having are some of the most often posted problems on this board. It is most likely spark plugs, transmission fluid needing to be changed or some emissions problem. Can you be more specific? How many miles on your truck? Has tranny fluid been changed? What engine do you have? What service have you had on it? etc.

I have about 58,000 on it already. I haven't changed the transmission fluid since I bought it. All I have been doing is just the basic stuff, which is change the oil and maintain the fluids. By the way, I have a 5.4 liter engine.

The tranny fluid should be changed at 60,000 miles. This may not be the problem but you should do it anyway. Like I said, these trannies are kinda' sensitive. It is at about this mileage when the spark plugs often start to go bad. They are supposed to be 100,000 mile spark plugs but nobody believes that. Hard to believe that spark plugs would cause that but they do. The easiest and cheapest way to get confirmation of the problem is to take it to an Autozone and have them check the engine codes for you. It's free. They can tell you what that means and you will then have a more definite starting point. It is quite possible that the code will be P030X or something similar which means that there is a misfiring in a cylinder.

I'd vote for checking codes first, and if that is not definitive, going for a tranny flush and refill. Valves get sticky, solenoids get tired, dirt collects, filters get full etc. A flush and refill is sometimes all it takes to fix the jerk or slip.

I changed my transmission fluid and the filter, and my car is still jerking when the automatic transmission changes from first to second gear. What should I do next? Can the spark plug be affecting that too? I haven't changed the spark plug yet. I need some help! That thing is really irritating me right about now.

Like I said, I changed my transmission fluid, but I didn't change my torque converter fluid. Do I have to drain all of it, or can I just drain the torque converter? Would a dirty torque converter fluid be causing my expy to jerk? Did I mess up not draining the torque converter fluid too?

All of the fluid eventually mixes together. So if you just drained your pan and not the TC, added 4 or 5 quarts and started it up, the new fluid is contaminated. If you drain the TC and pan, you'll need to refill with around 14 quarts. From the description of your problem, I don't think a simple fluid change will fix. Like I said earlier, find a good tranny shop. A seasoned vet will be able to diagnose your problem without a lot more speculation....and cost.

At 60K miles, your plugs should still be in relatively good shape, so I'd rule them out, especially when you say the problem only occurs when the tranny is shifting between 1st and 2nd.

I'm experiencing the same problem with my 1999 EB Expedition. My tranny jumps from 1st to 2nd. Some days are good days and I don't have the problem whenever I'm traveling at a high speed. I already changed my plugs however I did not change fluid and filter. I need help too!

You guys should be changing ALL the fluid every 30K. Most shifting problem are due to contaminanted or worn out fluid.

This was asked before but never did find the answer.

When you drain the TC. How do you refill it.?

Sorry if it's been answered. still wondering.
