The gasket around the front of my 9in diff is leaking how involved is it to replace the gasket? I have torn down a GM diff, but of course a 9in unloads with the ring gear. Will I need to do any adjusting before I reassemble it?
There will be no readjusting to the third member. Just remove the axles, 4 bolts on each axle located behind the drum. Once these bolts are out you may need a little effort in the form of a slide hammer when removing the axle. Then remove the bolts that hold the third member in. There will be copper washers under the bolts or should be. these help prevent the gear oil from leaking around the bolts. The washers will need some working to remove them. At this point the third member will fall out. Replace gasket and reverse the steps.
I wouldn't exactly say that it will fall out. If it has the original gasket, it will be stuck pretty good. Use a stiff putty knife or a thin, small chisel to break the seal. Also, thread 2 nuts just onto the end of the studs to prevent dropping the center section on your head.
