hello! I just bought my first Big Bronco. its an 89 bronco eddie bauer w/130k miles. its mostly highway... anyway the motor
feels like its a four cylinder. ((its running smooth on all eight))its a 5.0 but i reaaly gotta mash the pedal for it to move at normal speed. the gas cable is real hard too. the pedal feels hard when you push down on it. im not sure if this is normal. ive had 2 ford f250 pickups in the past both had the inline 6 and had good power. are the broncos with the automatic transmissions just slugs. or is there something i could do to bring it back to life.,???
For the pedal feeling hard....Mine has been the same way..till I undid the coil spring on the throttle body a bit. Takes 3 hands but if you are carefull.....can be done on your own. Just dont take it out too much...or it wont go back to full closed again. But before you do that...try lubricating the cable..or replace it. As for having to mash the pedal to get it to normal speeds, the gas pedal arm is made out of a thin weak C-channel. Get under the dash and look it over closely. They are prone to cracking and breaking. If its cracked, then it will bend and not give you all the travel that you need. You can get a replacement at a junk yard for about 5 bucks. Now if that doesn't help....start with the basics...tune up, fresh filters, oil change. And if nothing there...then start getting into the mechanics of the motor. checking compression, fuel flow..etc.
I have a 302 in my 85 and it will get up and go no problem.
i have a very simular problem i found out that my gas pedal had over a half inch in slack so i put in a spacer so now it gets full throttle but now once i get up to 65 or so my bronco seems to just die and stay at that speed any ideas
Sounds like it is kicking into overdrive but your throttle isnt really wide open. Check your cable and linkage. make sure the cab;e isnt stretched. ALso look at your pedal...like I said before it is weak and can bend or crack....shortening the distance to the floor
well i just replaced the cable about a week ago to a brand new one but that didnt do anything so i looked at the pedal no cracks or signs of bending but the pedal had a very short distance to the floor i looked and here the throttle cable is about a half inch to long so i oput a spacer between the cable and pedal
My stock pedal and original cable only have about 1/4 slack. Check the linkage to the throttle body and see if there are any adjustments there. Make sure that the TB end of the cable is connected solidly to the bracket on the TB. If it has come off any it may be moving more than it should, giving you more play. Also where it comes through the firewall should be solid too. How much space do you have between the pedal and the floor?
You know....You can get another pedal from a junk yard for about $3. It may be worth getting one and comparing it to yours....Mine has at least 2 inches clearance.
do you think it might be the tranny that has to do with it it feels like the tranny shifts then my rpms go down and it dont seem to have any push anymore
Overdrive is not meant to be a gusty gear for acceleration. It is supposed to be just enough to hold your speed at lower RPMs for better gas mileage. How much pedal do you need to get it to downshift out of OD?
