1950 V-8 Idendification

Where do I find the motor numbers that tell the difference between a truck and an auto motor. What are the major differences between a 1950 1/2 ton truck and auto V-8 motor ? Thanks

If it's original to the truck, it will have 8RT on the heads. Cars were 8BA on the heads. Trucks used wide belt waterpumps, but you can mount them to the car engines.

Could an 8BA head be mounted on a truck engine and work in place of an 8RT head except for maybe a change of the compression ratio ? Thanks for the info. Les

Yes it can. The compression probally is the same.

Hey, I appreciate the info. If the compression doesn't change what exactly is the difference in the heads other than the stampings. Maybe larger water jackets, different mounting configuration for accessories, ? Les

Your asking the wrong guy. MTFLAT is the guy to ask. He should know. All I know is that EBA heads had the highest stock head compression.

The 8BA and 8RT blocks are the same as far as I know. From what I've been able to learn the differences between truck and car engines were only bolt on accessories. Waterpumps/mounting location, bellhousing, oil pans, heads, and maybe cams, etc.

The following is from Joe Abbin's book on flathead CCs:

8CM 82cc 49-51 merc

59A \ 42-48 ford/merc all are 76cc
8BA \ 49-53 ford cars
8RT / 48-53 ford trucks
EAC / 52-53 merc

EAB 71cc 52-53 ford

Aftermarket heads:
Offenhauser 425 63cc
Offy 400 and Edelbrock 58cc
Offy 375 53cc
