ah hah! I always assume that the cubic inches = horsepower, coz the 4.9/300 has 300 horsepower and 5.0/302 etc.
Here's some info from Mercury: http://www.mercuryvehicles.com/vehicles/marauder/all_specs.asp
Well, horse power ratings etc for the Marauder appear to be an SS beater. But sadly for Ford, the Marauder is about 1/2 second slower in the quarter and it is speed limited to about 121mph due to driveshaft vibration. Har har har. A stock SS will run easily over 140mph and will smoke the Maraduer off the line, maybe just maybe the Marauder will do better at freeway passing. I don't know why the Marauder does so poorly, it weighs about the same and has better power specs, just no low end torque. But what do you want for a tarted up Mercury Marquis/Ford Clown Vic that costs $10,000 more than than a new SS used to cost?
I am disappointed that Ford appears to have missed the mark on this one. Maybe it was a preproduction car or something? I think the only things that the test drive said the Marauder did better than the SS was ride feel, maybe handling and "civilization". I guess they are catering to the blue hair crowd that wants to take a wlak on the wild side. There was some comment about the aftermarket for the Marauder, fine, that's fine, but don't forget the SS has essentially a Corvette engine small block Chevy. I think we all know the size of the aftermarket for that.
BTW I am not a GM Fan but the SS was the kind of car I wanted when I bought it and I didn't worry about what name plate was on it, other than I prefer American. Over 30 years, I have bought 2 Datsuns, 1 Dodge, 1 Pontiac, 2 Chevies and 5 Fords. So I don't get beat up, My fords currently outnumber my SS 3 to 1.
Got me an SS, and guess I'll keep it.

I know it didn't have 300 actual horsepower, I always thought thats how much it "has" but in actuality it puts out much less.
