Stalling engine/frying coil

Hi all, I have an 88 Ranger 4x4 with a 2.9L over 140,000 miles on it and i've been having a problem with the engine stalling and not starting again.. It runs really good until it's coil heats up, then it just dies and won't start again. If I leave the key turned to "Run" with the engine off, it burns the coil up in about 5 mins. I've replaced the cap, rotor, wires, plugs, TFI module, coil(2X now) and it still continues to stall and heat up/toast the ign. coil..

Until you can get things sorted out, cut the pos. lead to the coil and install a ballast resister in it. I know that this doesn't fix the problem, but it should stop the coil from overheating & quit.

I'll try the ballast resistor until i figure out what it could be..
I didn't get any bad KOEO codes, and i can't keep the eng. running long enough to pull the KOER codes..

My old '90 Taurus exhibited the same problems that you are experiencing and the problem was the TFI or Igniton Control Module that it is also known as. If you have fried the coil, that means that the TFI probably is okay when it's cold, but starts to short out, as most transistors do when they get hot. Did you use the heat sinking compound when you installed the new TFI? Very important! If you didn't the TFI will heat up rapidly and burn out again. Also, if you fried the coil, that means you might now have a defective coil as well. When you overheat a coil, sometimes the insulation on the windings are destroyed. I would have the TFI checked again and start from that point.
