2001 F250 PSD CC 4X4 3" LEVELING KIT. PROBLEM IS MY STEERING STABILIZER MOUNT BROKE IN HALF! HAS ANYONE HAD THIS HAPPEN/IS THIS COMMON? IF SO, WHAT DID U DO? FORD WANTS $895 JUST FOR A NEW PART (WHOLE NEW AXLE HOUSING). A LOCAL 4X4 SHOP SAID THEY'VE SEEN THIS AND USUALLY WELD THE PART (REINFORCE IT?) FOR $250. HELP?!
Doesn't seem to be an overly common issue. Have you checked into an aftermarket kit for vehicles without a factory stabilizer? If possible, it may be cheaper to "add" one than to fix the factory mounts.
Any chance of getting a picture of the broken part?
Did you bring this to a Ford rep's Attn:? not the dealer people!
Get them to have a Ford eng rep look at this. I wouldn't take no for an answer.
This could be a safety defect ???? Maybe !
what was the symptoms when it broke? wheel shimmy ,any loss of control?
If your truck has not been modified too much. did you hit something ?
I looked at mine on a 02 thats a pretty good piece metal to break!
you know with this firestone tire thing they had,I've heard they get real
interested when someone mentions a safety defect?
Just my couple of $.02
good luck

the problem is not with the actual stabilizer, it's with the sway bar (i think that's what it is) that attaches to the same mount, only above where the stabilizer is attached.
how do i get a hold of a ford rep. i took the truck to the dealer and they said they would not warranty the part since the truck was 5k over mileage. as far as hitting something, i bought the truck from private party. of course the only thing he admitted to hitting was a fawn or small deer. the only damage i notice was the plastic trim on the bottom of front bumper had a couple cracks wich i replaced for $58
i don't think there would have been enough impact to break a piece of steel that thick.
thx in advance

You might try contacting Dana to see if they have any suggestions on repairing/replacing the axle housing. Being the second owner and 5,000 miles out of warranty, I'm afraid you are at the mercy of Ford's kindness. With times being tough, I'm not suprised that they don't have much sympathy.
In this case ,you can give up on trying to get ford to do anything.
That must have been a pretty big deer (boulder) to break that bracket.
I would look the under side of this truck over real good, for more damage.
Nomo ,brings up a good suggestion, try contact Dana
www.dana.com find the axle tech group/contacts, all they have are
Phone #'s though no e-mail from what I saw.
You may be able to just get the bracket from them and if you have a friend with a plasma cutter and a mig welder and are real careful weld the new bracket on.
if you have to take this somewhere to get done, your problably get close to the cost of a new housing I would guess.
let us know how it all turns out

we have replaced one under warrenty, and welded one that was not under warrenty. if i had to pay for it i know what i would do. $250 seems awful expensive weld job? looks like two short welds and some grinding prep??? my 2 cents

what was the cause of those brackets being broke ? the ones you fixed!
Metal fatigue and stress, or result of a hit or accident
Just wondering if you knew.
I notice when hooking the up the plow on mine ,this tends to put
alot of stress in this area .
I also think ,correct me If I'm wrong but is he talking about the
track bar that runs from the frame to the metal bracket just above where
the stabilizer mounts on the front axle housing?
I looked at mine and it could be made stronger with alittle help.
Maybe boxing it? or reinforcing it somehow!
Any thoughts ?

unless he is calling it something different the steering stabiliser is the dampner shock that runs from the front axel to the drag link. this is a option and some trucks do not even have on on them. so i guess what i am getting at is there can't be that much pressure on it to break. when someone is trying to get something covered under warrenty they always claim they were just driving down the road normal and it fell off. always sounds like the story you used to give dad when you brought his truck home with something broke. would not get too worried about it if yours is not broke now.

i have no reason to lie to you guys. i was driving on an asphalt road 50 mph towing my 26 ft sleekcraft boat. when all of a sudden the steering wheel started shaking like all h----! it felt like the left front tire was going to fall off. it is the stabilizer mount that is broke. it's just above where the stabilizer bolts... so the stabilizer is currently in place and working. it's what i thought was the sway bar that is hanging because it mounts above the stabilizer on the stabilizer mount. (above post says this "sway bar" as i call it may be a "tracking bar", i don't know).
thx for all the input guys, i'll let you know what i find out.

do you know what caused your stabilizer mount to break? when you had it welded, did you do anything special (weld, reinforce, etc.)? anything i should look out for, and what is a fair price for a quality job?
thx in advance

Nomo, I asked that back on post #2
I think he's talking about the bracket that the track bar and the steering stablizer is attached to.
a pic tells a thousand words !
