tracking bar runs diagonally from the frame to the axel. if that mount broke i could see the shakeing and the driving problems. if the sway bar mount or the steering dampner broke i would doubt you being able to feel anything drastic. so it sounds to me like the tracking bar mount broke.
i don't exactely know the cause of the problem but i can tell you my theory. the two that i saw seemed like the weld did not penetrate well to the axel. the one that was under warrenty we called it in and dana real quick sent us another axel no questions like "maybe" they had seen it before??? the other was not under warrenty and it needed to be fixed quick. so ground the old weld off the axel ground off the bracket and buzzed it back on. no problems since and have not seen any more with a problem for better than a year.
hey yall, we was rotating the tires on our 2000 f-350 dually and i was lookin in the area where i think the discussion about the stabilizer bar breakin of and i noticed that there is about a 1/2" crack in the mount. i took some pics of it and ill try to get them posted tomarrow afternoon and see if this is where the other guys had the same prob.
thx for all the replies. unfortunately i'm unable to get pics for posting, but i think rich hit the problem on the head. i was using wrong terminology (sway bar), i guess it is a tracking bar. i'm just going to clean up the mount and reweld it.
it is on the front passenger side of the axle. the pictures are kind blurry and it might be kinda hard to see it. the cracks are right where the two peices are joined together. let me know if ya have trouble findin them and ill go back and put a circle around them. hope this helps.
