Getting my 1980 f250 ranger on the road again but need help with headlight switch. Original headlight switch started burning when turned all the way to dome light but worked for turning on parking/running lights. Did not work for turning on dome/dash lights. Bought new switch, but all it would turn on was headlights and nothing else. Thought maybe the switch was bad so exchanged for another but same results. The old/new switchs are identical but didn't know if its maybe the wrong switch? All fuses are good. I was told by the guy I bought this truck from there was a small wiring fire at one time and has been rewired so maybe just a bad wiring job? Not much experience with electrical so Any help is appreciated.
Are you sure they are giving you the correct switch? I would not go by the switch you have, someone may have put the wrong one in. 80 has a oddball headlight switch. When you have the switch out, plug it in and check for voltage on the brown wire. This wire is the one that feeds the running/taillights.
It did end up being the wrong switch but the correct switch is still having the same problem. It's still smoking when the switch is turned up almost to the dome light position. Turn it about half way back and it stops. guessing i must have a short somewhere? Again any suggestions would be great, thanks
