The shroud alone can make all the difference between staying in range and overheating. Its always the number one step I recomend if someone isn't running one...
If your rad is old it usually helps to have it cleaned out too.
I'm glad I stepped away from the shroudless flex fan and went electric. The shroud is pretty much a must in our trucks as the engine set so far away from the rad.
As near as I can tell fan shrouds appeared on trucks in the 66 model year. I've seen catalogs listing them beginning in 66. Seen one on E-Bay for a 66.
I have a 65 without a shroud and from all I've been able to find out I think a 66 shroud would fit, but I know the rad core suuports are year specific between 65 and 66, so maybe not.
My truck never gets over 175 anyway. That fan sure looks lonesome out there all by itself but apparently it works.
well it should help significanly, jcwhinety has chromeplated shrouds for 20-30 bucks, they are universal, after i got mine my truck held a consitent 180 degrees. also try replacing the thermostat.
