360 oil pressure problem
Just wondering if anyone can help me figure out my problem. I have a 73 F100 with a 360 FE in it and it runs great, but yesterday I drove to the airport to pick up a family member, it is 30 miles away, I drove 65mph all the way there on the highway, but as I got into town, it ran fine until I came to a stop light, sitting there idling, my oil pressure gauge slowly dropped its way down to the "L" on my gauge and even further than the "L", then my engine started sputtering, If i took it out of drive and put it into neutral, as the RPM's rose, the oil pressure went back to normal. It idles fine and all, and the oil pressure will only act like that after I have driven at high speed for an extended time period. At a stop, the oil pressure gauge just dives.. and I mean dives.... I take off and all is well again.... what is going on here? and why is the problem intermittant? if the oil pump is bad, shouldnt it do this all the time? not just after a long drive?
Running at high speeds, the oil ends up in the valve covers and drains back down too slowly, causing oil starvation to the lifters - hence the sputtering.
At any rate, this is not good for your engine. The return holes are easy - just pull the valve covers and see if they are clogged. They can be rodded out with a piece of wire.
If no problem there, then it is time to pull the oil pan and see what's going on with your pump and screen.
The oil return holes sound like something that might be wrong on my truck, I'll check them out this weekend, I really dont want to pull the oil pan , but if I have to, then thats what has to be done.
Thanks again!!!
