I hear a clunk *sometimes* when shifting from park or reverse into either reverse or drive. I am not moving at all when I hear this noise. Foot is on the brake (it has to be to shift from Park). Do you think this indicates a bad U-joint? Something in the tranny? I realize I could take it to the Ford Garage, but I would like to get some advice before I go and put myself in a position where I have to talk to those idiots.
If your truck is an automatic, this may help. When I park my truck on a slight incline and don't set the parking brake, it will clunk when shifted into gear. If you stop to park and let your foot off the brake, it tends to roll a littleuntil the tranny stops it. The stopper in the tranny is a gear, so the gears are locked together. When you go to put it into gear, you still have those gears locked together. When you move the shifter, it will unbind those gears, clunking will occur, but you aren't doing any damage. If it bothers you, set the parking brake.
My truck makes the same noise. When i pullup to my driveway in drive and stop and shift to reverse to back in. That is when i hear this noise. All my u-joints are tight, i have 10,000 miles on the truck.
I sounds like play in the rear to me. It has done this since it was new, but i never had the dealer listen to it.It seems to be just annoying rather than a problem.

This sounds like what I hear. I hope it is annoying rather than a problem

Definitly not a high pitched clunk.
No clunking when taking off.
To me it sounds drive line related. But i have checked the u-joints, and they are good. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of play in the rear. But i wouldn't really know how much is too much.I guess you could describe it as dropping into gear. Are you thinking transmission related?
Noises are the hardest thing to help with over the internet! I experienced some various noises like I had described and thought maybe I could help pinpoint. It does seem more driveline related than transmission but...
I know it's winter and all but you COULD try to crawl under the truck and have someone you REALLY TRUST!! put it in and out of gear to see (hear) if you can pinpoint the area in which the noise is coming from. You know that's what the grease monkey at the dealership is gonna do anyway but he'll charge you $60+. You can do it for free.
I had a similar clunk but it was accompanied with a clunk at take off. Or just after. It turned out to be a bad driveshaft.
Big ,
Did you tell us how many miles on this truck?
Is this a limited slip Diff?
Has the rear lube been changed in this truck?
If not I would start looking for metal particles on the magnet fill plug
a little is alright but alot i would suspect major problems inside.
yes ,u-joints can make that sound ,but also improper backlash in the rear as drivelines start to wear we get the total acumulation of all factors involved.(u-joints + driveline splines + ring and pinon backlash + axle splines + even internal transmision).
I've seen rear diff have a problem right from the factory!
Is there any leakage around the pinon seal? if so i would start to get concerned about internal of the rear diff. this is a good indication of
a backlash problem with the ring and pinon. improper preload of the pinon bearing from factory can ruin the rear dif very quickly.
you said this was there from the day one.
If i was troubleshooting it, I would approach it like" monsta "has suggested.
be aware of how much the rear flange on the Drive shaft moves ???
before you hear the clunk or tink type sound.
Sorry about the long post.
let us know what you find !
