I ordered a Diablo chip for my 5.4L in my 00 F-250 SD. Should I get new plug wires and plugs? I plan on getting new plugs at least and think I should get new wires too. Any brands you think work the best? Any other additions I should install with the new chip?
My truck will turn 50,000 miles in the next two or so days.
It may be but if I am putting a chip in that upps the HP, I thought it might be a good idear to put in some beefier wires and hotter plugs (like a Bosch platinum or something).
I don't know if I buy that 100k thing. I think that is under ideal conditions and I for one do not use my truck under 'ideal' conditions! It may be a marketing hype and I suppose the Bosch Platinums may be the same thing - marketing hype. That is kinda why I am posting here - to get a sense of what has worked in the real world for people. I know it is all anecdotal, but if enough anecdotes are similar, I tend to take more stock in it. You read this forum enough and you get a sense of the people posting on it and weather or not they know what the h@!! they are talking about. Like that Monsta fellow - does he know what the h@!! he is talking about? (just kidding!)
First, your gonna have a REAL hard time finding the plug wires. The gas engines use a coil-on-plug setup where each sparkplug has it's own coil snapped onto the top (where the old-fashioned plug wires used to go). The only other "wire" is the low-voltage wiring harness that plugs into the coil. No need to ever change these unless it fails.
As for the sparkplugs themselves, I (ok- a friend did the work) changed them in my wifes '97 Expedition at 30,000 miles. The factory ones didn't look bad at all. The Bosch +4 platinums made no noticeable improvement in performance or economy. I say pull one or two plugs and look at them. If they are OK, then keep running them. If they need changing, then just get a set of normal (not multi-pronged) plugs.
i installed a set of bosch plat.+4 and noticed an immediate difference.slightly better throttle response, much quicker starts, runs cleaner and big improvement in mileage.check out the new plat.+2seems to expose more flame.
Well, I guess I will tend against new plugs and wires. I will check out the current (is that a pun?) ones and if they look good, they stay. If they look bad, I may go for the Platinum +4s. We will see. Thanks for the input.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Feb-02 AT 10:02 AM (EST)]When you replace the plugs (either the old ones or with new ones) be sure to use a dab of anti-sieze on the threads. You sure don't want to damage the aluminum heads when you pull the plugs a second time.
