Mileage Computer Questions

I've seen a bunch of ya'll ask about the mileage computer. It brought up a question of my own that I didn't want the answered buried somewhere.

Where exactly does this computer get it's information from? What sensors? or combination thereof?

I too feel it is basically useless as there is no REAL real time data. I can reset it, like once I'm up to speed on the highway, to get that particular info but there is no real feature. My wife's van (a Mopar) has pretty cool computer up top. Temp, comp, avg.MPG, DTE, real time MPG, a trip CLOCK for getting average speed. Some pretty good data...wish Ford had it. Although, I would rather have it display things like Transmission temps, Coolant temps, Oil pressure etc. instead.

Chances are I know how cold it is outside 'cause I just got in my truck. And I know when I'll run out of gas because I have a gas guage. And that computer isn't accurate for the tank of gas/fuel your using at the moment, as you all know anyway...

Mileage Computer Questions

You figured it out but I still haven't. Where are the sensors? How do they measure 40 gallons of fuel a thimble full at a time?

Okay, the computer uses input from;

[ol]
[li]The fuel flow sensor. (I'm not at home where my manual is so I don't have the real name...)
[li]Speedometer / Odometer
[li]Fuel gauge
[/ol]

And obviously the outside air temp sensor for the temp. And an internal compass.

When I get home I'll update this for you.

Mileage Computer Questions

Monsta,

Good guess except there is no fuel flow sensor.

The mileage computer gets it's fuel flow information from the PCM. The PCM counts the injector pulses, and knows how long the injectors are open. It also knows ho much fuel can flow through the injectors. It then calculates how much fuel is being consumed and sends that information to the mileage computer.

Well Mark, if you read what I wrote after I said "...sensor", you'll see that I didn't have the correct term for it. I knew it was derived from the PCM but the manual gave it a special name and not just PCM.

I wasn't guessing and I made sure to tell him that I would update it when I had more complete information.

Mark, I have learned a tremendous amount from you! You are a wealth of information! I just wish you'd take some lessons in tact.;-)
