Does anyone about how many miles you should get per tank of gas on a 4.0 2001 4x4 xlt. I'm getting about 230 till the check gage light comes on.I used to drive a 97 ranger 4 banger 2 wheel drive and get close to 400 miles per tank. I know it depends a lot on how i drive but is all highway miles. What can i do to get more miles per tank. Is this milage normal

I have a '01 Ranger Supercab 4x2 4.0L SOHC, and I've been averaging about 15 mpg with mostly city driving. Very disappointing.

I used to have '94 Ranger Supercab 4x2 2.3L, and it averaged about 20 mpg.

The old MPG forum

Well this surfaces everytime someone fills a few tanks in their new Ranger. They just don't have good fuel economy. Low gears in the rear end, 4x4 drive, and a fuel sucking engine have lots to do with it. My truck is performing great and the poor mileage is just was was declared on the window sticker. 13-15 city 15-18 highway. Oh well if we were not in the USA we would be driving a 2.5 liter diesel. In 2006/07 when they revamp the model I hope they offer a similar engine here.

The power in a 4.0l is real good. I love the fact that I can haul semi-serious weight or tow 2500 lbs and the truck just runs like there is nothing attached. The fuel mileage even empty is not real great (i average around 18mpg). The power is nice to have. I bought a used Saturn to run to work at least 3 days per week. It gets 37mpg. I save the Ranger for all the fun stuff (4wheelin' and haulin'). You can't beat a Ranger....
