V-10 or V-8?

Hello all,

I'm thinking of getting a SD and was wondering which engine I should get. I will tell you right now I prolly don't need a truck this big but I WANT it. I am also thinking of the F-150 but I don't think I really want to buy a first year vehicle. The truck will be a mostly daily driver with infinite runs to Home depot(I do alot of handy-man type work). I DID check the FAQ's as that seems to be a touchy subject lately) . All I found was that the V-10 gets 1 mpg less on average than the V-8. I'm just wondering if one engine is better overall(less problems) than the other. Since the mpg is so close I would like the V-10 I think but I know the 5.4 is a proven engine......Any thoughts??

Thanks,

Ron

PS. Whatever I get I will be driving into the ground(10+years)I'm looking at the S/C and C/C

OK, I'll bite!! Get the V10. You'll need the extra grunt to get that 6000#+ beast moving! Forget about the gas mileage...if you're worried about MPGs, get a Toyota!!!

I have the 5.4 currently (see sig) it is just a daily a$$ hauler and does this well. I used it to do home improvement projects with no problems. I enjoy the power but my next purchase will be a PSD cause I'm getting a toy hauler and need the better mpg and power to spare . However back to the topic V8 will not let you down or sound funny (time to take cover).
Just my .02

I would go for the v-10, the local cop trucks around here have the 5.4 and they are turds. One of my buddies is a cops son, and his dad says they are worthless, and people will out accell and out run them, if they had to go back and buy them again, he would have gotten the v-10.

Get the v10. The mileage isn't great, but it isn't so hot with a 5.4 either. I would also recommend 4.30 gears.

Thank you all for your responses. Still a little confused tho. Looks like most prefer(or wish they had) the V-10. Sounds like many think the V-8 is a little slow. I think I'll go test drive a few and see what I think. I'm sort of a grandpa when it comes to driving...I never stomp the gas and don't care about how fast 0-60 is. I just need a truck that will last. As I said it will be mostly a daily driver. I'll keep ya'll posted on my test drives.....thanks again....

Here's my take, and I usually keep out of V8 vs. V10 discussions but when you said you drive like a grandpa it got my attention becuase I drive that way too!

Go for the V10 because it will maintain your speed on the highway at lower rpm and with much less downshifting. If I'm not towing or hauling any weight in the bed I can peg the cruise control at 65/70mph and it never drops out of overdrive to stay at that speed, even on long hills.

Mine has a 3.73 and I've been happy with it. I tow a trailer that goes 4000 to 7000lbs and it handles that load easily and still makes a great daily driver.

rferoni,

I have no idea what these wags mean when they say the 5.4 is a turd, or slow. That's a lot of crap. I have two, one in a 150 and the other in an SD. I also have a V-10. The 150 will give my SD a good run because it's lighter, but my SD is no slouch. It hauls but, plus I tow a 30 footer with it with no problema!

And seeing's how you aren't a lead-footed driver, I think you will appreciate the 5.4.....

As far as which one is better, the answer is neither. They are built identcally the same. Same e-tronics, same pistons, rods, etc. That's why they are called modular. Just that the V10 has 2 more cylinders tacked on to it.

The V10 is about 600 bucks more at the dealer, and will cost a little more in gasoline. I love mine, but I use it for really heavy towing into steep mountains.
(4.10 axle and slightly smaller diameter tires than my SD pick-up.)

Take a look at my gallery and you will see what I tow and what I tow with.

Sir,

I have an '02 F-250 SD Crew Cab 5.4L with 3.73 rear gears. True, it's not the fastest 3/4 ton truck on the road, but who cares? The motor is smooth, quiet and consistent. I get 14 mpg because I don't stomp on it unless absolutely necessary. I don't tow anything or haul anything on a regular basis, but the few times I've had a decent load (galvanized piping, bags of Qwik-Crete, 7 trash barrels filled with earth and debris, etc...), it handled the load with no loss of power or performance. It didn't even know it was loaded down in the bed.

Yes, the V-10 is a very stout and worthy motor and in no way am I bad-mouthing it one bit,... but common sense should tell you: if you really don't need the 2 extra cylinders and the extra gas-guzzling, why go to the added expense? And I seriously doubt that the V-10 gets only 1 mpg less than the 5.4L V-8, even if you soft-pedal it around town and obey the highway speed limits like me.

My $.02 !

I agree that the 5.4 isn't a bad engine....but I bought the V-10...why because for 500 bucks I get more....there is no substitute for displacement......I don't hop on it much and tend to obey the speed limits..mostly... I can drive at 70 and sit right at 2000 rpm's. The engine isn't working as hard and it is nice to have the extra umph when and if you need it.

referoni,

Ijust bought V10, 3.73, atuomatic. I love it (250 miles), but my '88 with tricked 351W, 4.10 & 5 spd. will whoop it's butt in the 1/4, but when thaws out, hopefully it will tow the boat easier. Go for the V10 for torque and the cool V10/Triton emblems on the fender.

good luck.
