You said you want longevity, wouldn't a bigger engine not working as hard last longer? Figure out approximately how long you want to keep the truck and about how many miles you think will be on it. Then see who has a motor with that king if mileage.
the v10 is nice if you have the need. the psd is better yet for hauling. if fact, would be my only choice to haul a load on a regular basis
i have been running my 5.4 4.10 ratio since 99 and no problems and still get 17 highway. also i don't have the extra 2 cylinders and related parts to wear out. the 5.4 keeps up with traffic (contrary to what many people think) and will surpass it if i want to stand on the gas...
no problems on this end with a gasser but if i were to buy another i would get the psd. if i needed something fast i would buy the lightning which is the 150 class and that class may better suited for your needs because of the 250s heavier weight. also the 250s ride cannot compare to the ride of a 150.
1. V10 costs just a little more
2. About the same gas mileage as the V8
3. Higher resale value for the V10
4. More HP/ More torque
5. Proven reliability
6. Bragging rights
7. No brainer
What's the old saying?.... I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
I think there is a misconception when a 5.4 guy says he would like the V10. That does not mean that the 5.4 is not a good motor. It is a great motor. Just that the V10 has a bit more. The 5.4 does down shift a lot on high way driving. But it has good power and I would buy the 5.4 again but I would get the 4.10 and not the 3.73 gears.. My next truck will very likely be a PSD. I don't plan on selling the one I have now. So I will have the best of both worlds. Gas and diesel
I was in the same situation as you last year. I really wanted a PSD Superduty, but I couldn' justify spending that much money on a truck that was going to be mainly a DD and only towing a few times a year. So, I started looking at the F150's with the 5.4L. I didn't really like the interior and the inside was a lot smaller than the SD.
I went to the dealership one day to pick out a 150 and I found the exact same truck in a 250 SD for only a couple thousand more. It ended up being the perfect truck for what I need a truck to do. I've got the look and interior that I wanted and I didn't spend an arm and a leg for it.
I've modified my 5.4 with a K&N kit and SCMT 1715 and it has plenty of power for me and it tows my jeep just fine. It's a little slow on the uphills towing the Jeep, but hey, it's only a couple times a year.
Hopefully one of these days I'll get a 6.0, but for now, the 5.4 will do everything I need it to do.
Sure does
Whatever you think your "needs" would be for a V10 would be what "needs" means
If I never towed, I'd get the V8.
If I never towed, and wanted POWER (more power that is), I'd get the V10.
If I towed 24/7, the PSD would be the way to go.
I Never tow (well, I do, in the summer) , and I got the PSD. I know, I'm wierd.
Well I think what it all boils down too is.... If I am going to make payments on a truck then I am gonna get the one I truly want! True longgevity and power better mpg and unlimited power. You got it PSD, crew cab, Lariat, with tons of extras, it tows the **** out of a huge toyhauler at 75-80 mph through the steepest rockies you can find. Thats right blowin by Cummins and Duramax!!!!!
Just had to add one thing. Bigger displacement does not mean lower RPM on the freeway. Gear ratios and tire size affect RPM. Yes, more power can mean less down-shifting out of OD, but that is not the same as running a lower RPM at a given speed just because of engine size.
Keep me posted, I'm in the same boat as you are, not sure when I will be able to buy one, but I have started looking for a SD, 4x4, ex-cab, 5.4 or V 10.
Thanks Stampede

On the same note, here's my opinion:
*Small amount of towing- V8
*Moderate amount of towing, or small amount of towing and like the extra power- V10
*Lots of heavy towing to justify extra $$$ for motor and oil changes- 6.0 PSD
