Exclamation '96 Explorer XLT engine and tranny

I bought 1996 Explorer XLT with 4x4 and auto tranny for real low price, although it has bad main bearing (possibly other areas) and check light engine code comes up with one code and that is P0756 which means shift solenoid "b" indicates inadequate performance or a "stuck off" condition....

I need opinions and advices from all of you experts on my choices...

it has 4.0L engine and im not sure if its ohv or not (how do i tell??) and im thinking maybe i go with replacing the motor with same engine... or do i try to upgrade to 4.0 (not ohv) or perhaps a 5.0?? are the tranny and 4x4 same for all three motors??
OR, do i go ahead and order engine rebuild kit and rebuild from bottom, replacing all bearings, maybe replace rings on pistons???

as for tranny, i think i will go with rebuild unless not advised. I would say I am mechanically expert and have done many engine works and rebuilding and overhaul-- but money is my biggest concern right now and i need it running ASAP since I got real tight schedules. Any inputs would be greatly appreicated!!

1996's had 4.0 SOHC which is better than the OHV pushrod engine. it should say on the plastic intake cover like my 02 explorer that its a 4.0L SOHC. stick with the SOHC cause you might have to change stuff on the engine if you go back to the OHV pushrod. 4r55e is a 4 speed, 5r55e is a 5 speed.

SOHC didn't come out until the '97 model year. It was the V8 that was introduced in '96.
