Any inline six from 87-96 will work just fine. If you do a search in this forum or the Inline Six forum you will find several articles about this.

Can I ask why you would want the I6 over a 302? Is it fuel economy? I have a 91 f250 5 speed with a 351 that I pull my Mustangs with. I installed a speed density computer out of an 87 5spd V-8 Mustang and wired the injectors to work in my truck. The fuel economy almost doubled and the power is much better.

The 300 gets slightly worse fuel economy than the 302 actually.

^ I have a 302 and my dad has a 300. I get 14-15, he gets 16-17. Both manual overdrive transmissions.

I want the six because of the durability....slightly better fuel economy,,and I occasionally pull a small camping trailer...the are I live in is quite hilly and the torque from the six would be much better....I am really interested in what has to be changed over,,,,I.E. exhaust,,,,computer....all information would be helpful...thanks

I've never done it but I've read the posts of those who have swapped out sixes for eights and everything is different from the computer to the sensors to the exhaust and emmissions. Unless you have a donor truck and the ability to do the work yourself it will cost you several K; I love the 300 but you might be better off building up the 302 for torque ond beefing up the bottom end.

well frame mounts are different so get the frame mounts off the old truck..radiator is different a/c compressor is in a different place so get the hoses off the 4.9 truck...you will need the under the hood wiring harness along with the engine wiring harness and computer. It will bolt to your tranny so thats ok. Fan and fan clutch from 4.9. Exhaust is different so you will have to have a exhaust shop make it work with your existing system now. and if the crash truck has a E4OD then you are in good shape...if not then the computer won't work because it won't control your tranny. Other than some odds and ends its not too bad. I went from a 4.9 to a 5.8 on one of my trucks and it took a weekend to swap everything out and get it running! Hope that helps.
