I'm looking at a new transmission here pretty soon, already have the AOD and have read about it's shortcomings, so I'm looking for some comparitive info on the C6. I don't have any loyalty to the AOD and if the C6 is tougher and lasts longer, that's the way I'd go.
The only downfall that I can think about with the C6 is that it doesn't have overdrive. But, if you don't do a lot of fast driving over 45-50 then you should be fine. Yes, the C6 is a tough transmission.
If the AOD is newer than 88 and not the electronic version, its not a bad tranny if you need overdrive. It comes in a close and wide ratio with the close having a first gear of 2.24:1 and the wide a first of 2.84.
The c6 has a close and wide also, the close being 2.46:1 and the wide 2.72:1.
I don't no what applications got which ratio though and I'm not certain how to tell them apart.
I've never been totally happy with any automatic tranny but these are the only 2 I would consider for a Bronco barring a major engineering feat.
If out and out rugged being the requirement, go with a C6. If you need OD, go with the AOD.
A C6 will last a long time but to say it last for X amount of miles would be difficult to say since driving habits play a big part in the life of the trans. It will out last an AOD under the same conditions and I think that is the point being made here.
I have a C6 in my 86 Bronco and I have been running full synthetic transmission oil and a 6 micron Caterpillar synthetic medium spin on filter on the cooler return line. My oil sample analysis reports come back excellent, wear metals are very low and the ISO particle count is down in the 14/12 range. I also have a 12,000 lb external cooler. This transmission has 260,000 KM (162,500 miles) and still kicking.
the c6 is a way tuffer tranny. but the AOD if built right will do very well and has OD which is nice on those long road trips. figure about 1500 for a well built AOD and 600 -800 for a stout c6. the OD will help prolong engine life as well because it allows it to cruise at a better rpm .
i believe you can take the tail housing off to allow a tcase to bolt up to it. but not 100% on that. something to conicerder on this is a 2wheel drive tranny wont have as high of first gear as say a 4x4 of the same tranny.
