I have a 99 f-250 with a powerstroke. I keep havng problems with the fuel filter. A few months ago I had a local place replace the fuel filter. A few weeks later fuel started shooting out between the gasket. I replaced the fuel filter. A month later it started doing it again so I tightened it down tighter. Then a week later it started blowing out again. So I bought a new filter and barely tighted it down and it leaked so I tighted it down tighter and it stopped. So come to find out all of the filters that you get at the auto parts have the filter and the cap attched, but it comes from ford in two seperate peices. So I bought them from ford. Today the filter from o-reilly went out again so I put the one from ford on. This is getting pretty expensive. Has anyone else had this problem or know what can be done to keep it from happening. Thanks a lot.
Aftermarket filters with the lid attached sometimes do not have the correct gasket. The Ford lid uses a triangular cut "O" ring gasket to seal between the lid and the housing, many who have posted with the regular round "O" rings have problems leaking.
was the rubber gasket facing the right way? if i remember right the flat edge goes towards the filter and the beveled part faces the cap. i always put a little bit of grease on the gasket before i install it and haven't had any problems yet. the grease trick makes it a lot easier or remove the cap when the time comes.
hope this works for you
Make sure you put the gasket on the lid, not the fuel bowl as you are putting the lid on, if you put it on the bowl, it will more than likely push down into the filter bowl, thus causing a leak. If you put it on the lid first, it can't fall into the bowl. Then turn the lid slowly and make sure the gasket is not getting pinched. You should not be having the problems you are having. Just watch that gasket as you install it and the leak should be gone.
Expensive? Now that you have gone back to the Ford set up you must have had to buy the seperate filter cap. That is part is usually about 60 bucks and is the most expensive part. You dont' replace the Fordcap you reuse it. The filter elements bought at Ford are about 35 bucks. Go online to ShopDiesel.com and buy the Raycor filter element for less than 20 bucks. It is the exact same filter that Ford uses, just not in the Ford box. Follow the instructions on how to install the o-ring and bevel washer and it won't leak. I run the cap down hand tight then turn it 1" with my oil filter wrench. Doesn't leak and is easy to get off again.
Yea I ordered a bunch of the Raycor from ShopDiesel after I payed 30 some bucks for one at the local rip-me-off parts store and when I got them they were IDENTICAL to the one that I just spent double the money on. Same little direction sheet included but minus the name-brand box. I think that o'ring design is just asking for problems - but I slop fuel all over it and use a wrench and haven't had any leak yet. Knock on wood.
