anyone know what puller the shop manual is talking about for the 51. I can't remove the steering Gear arm to save my life.
I'm trying to remove the gear box in order to remove the steering shaft, but in order to do that I need to remove the steering arm.
Be sure to take the lock bolt competely out. If you loosen but do not remove it, it will keep the arm locked on the shaft. This wasn't obvious in my parts or shop manuals.
Maybe I was lucky but I just loosened the nut on the arm and put a crow bar between frame and arm to apply pressure. Then I used a brass hammer and smacked the nut a couple of times and it came loose.
I tried a gaer puller and that didnt work at all so I just heated it up with a torch and hit it a few times with a hammer and after about ten minutes it came off.
Matt
I used a gear puller and a couple of ball peen hammers to "warm" up oposite sides of the arm around the splines and it came off without too much hassle and no busted knuckles. If you don't have a gear puller or better yet a proper pitman arm puller many of the auto parts stores will loan you one if you just put down a deposit. Really makes it much easier and you don't run the chance of ruining the part - mine was toast anyway as the ball looks more like an oval...could be where some of the wander was coming from methinks.
