I'm in need of help with advice on how to find and install a kickdown rod on 351M400 motor. i recently purchased a 79f350
4x4 auto trans. Replaced stock carb with a Holley 2300 2bbl. The only thing present is the throttle cable which hooks attaches to the carb fine. The motors runs good even without the rod but I think it would probably do better with it. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. My email address is edbigger@cloh.net Thanks
These trucks did not come stock with an AOD. But one may have been swapped in. If it is a C6 the kick down rod only cotrols the shift out of 2nd to 3rd or back from 3rd to 2nd.
If it is actually an AOD the linkage you refer to is NOT a kick down but called a throttle valve or TV cable. If it is not properly installit it will burn up the transmission. There are brackets available to properly mount the TV cable. I think Lentech or Art Carr handles the brackets. You could also check at Holley, Edelbrock or Mr Gasket.
Thanks for the info. It is a c6 Trans and I wasn't sure if the kickdown was stock or even necessary. I'm a weekend mechanic with limited knowledge outside the basics. So I guess I'll leave it alone and move on to something else. Thanks again. Ed
If you've got a 351M/400 engine and a C6 transmission you can most likely find the kickdown rod at a junkyard, you might try looking at late 70s Lincolns, Cougars, Thunderbirds, as well as Fseries trucks as they all could have the same engine/trans setup.
The rod is secured to an arm on the carb. and to the kickdown arm on the trans. as well, and if you find one you can use the clips that will be on it to install on your truck.
This is an easy job and will make your truck more comfortable to drive, as you won't have to pull the shifter down to 2nd gear manually anymore when you need to pass of speed up to get onto an interstate ramp.
I drilled a hole in the floor and slide a rod down and connected it to the tranny lever. I put a **** on top of the rod. When I want to pass some one I tromp on the gas petal and push down on the rod.
Tranny shifts to a lower gear and you are flying down the road.
