I was looking through the mileage post and came across a post by CowboyBilly 9Mile that said something about it and searched and couldn't find how to do it. If anybody can tell me how and when. Just bought a '97 that was rode hard and put away soaking. Just tring to liven her up again. Thanks.
Carbon build up can be steam cleaned carefully with water. Warm the engine up completely and connect a small vacuum line to a port on the intake manifold. Place it into a container of water for a few seconds at a time, capping it between. Let the engine run for a bit between each sip of water to warm the combustion chamber back up. If the engine speed slows significantly, remove the line from the water immediately and allow the motor to speed back up before using the water again.
Don't forget to replace spark plugs after implemeting the TSB and park somewhere where you don't care about the crud that's gonna come out of the tailpipe. Also, be aware that a dirty MAF can cause engine knock.

Find a shop that has a MotorVac....it runs a detergent through the whole fuel system...cleans the intake, injectors, and all the way through the cats! http://motorvac.com/mcs245_pg.html
If she was rode hard and put away soaking, it probably isn't carbon. Usually a good drive on the highway will blow it out. I would do a good tuneup, compression check, vacuum check etc. What kind of mileage are you getting?
What I have done so far: Changed air cleaner, changed oil in engine and tranny, ran some injector cleaner and filled up with 97 oct. I still have that tank but the milage seems to be pretty good so far. It is a 4-cyl though so I expect pretty good milage. As soon as we get a good day here (VA) I am going to tackle the plugs and wires. Truck has 140,000 miles on it and it looks like I am doing some routine maint. on it for the first time. Any suggestions would help.
Ya, 89 octane is what I run in my '91, I seem to get the best mileage out of that, which is roughly 27-28mpg, however, when I use 87 or 91, whew.... I get ABOUT 22mpg, I dunno!! Anyways, we have used Seafoam in my buddy's '88 F-150 w/ 302, dont know if it really makes a difference, but makes a whole heck of a lotta smoke, lol, so dont do it at night on a busy section of road in downtown (unless you want too, hehe ) as we did, on "accident".
Got alotta looks though, but seriously, this stuff puts out so much smoke it will blind motorist behind you, just as if you were to have blown your motor. Trust me
