93 Ranger (won't shift)

I've got a 93 Ranger with a 2.3L with 40K actual miles. Recently, it's been difficult to shift into gears, especially at a dead stop. The clutch fluid is full, and these are supposed to be self-adjusting clutches, right? At times its so difficult that the only way to get into a gear is by pumping the clutch. When this happens, the clutch pedal has no give, it simply sinks down the floor. Any ideas? I don't believe the clutch itself is going bad, because I don't experience any slippage. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Check your clutch fluid level. Sounds like the hydraulic pump isn't getting fluid or the pump may be bad. That is if it's a hydraulic clutch.

It's a problem in the hydraulics. Try flushing to remove all crud and dirty fluid then bleeding. After that, if it still does it, you need to determine if it's the master cyl (not too bad to replace ) or the slave cyl (grrrrrr, drop the tranny). You are correct about them being self adjusting.

BTW, if you have to add mucho fluid, check for leaks.

I couldn't get my 2.3 liter into first gear and it turned out to be shifter bushings. It worked like new after that.

But, I agree about the other explanations.
