Everything back together and now it can't shift

Everything back together and now it can't shift

I just finished up replacing my clutch and slave cylinder. Got everything put together other than putting the shifter back in place. When I did it was very difficult to shift, and now I can't get it out of gear. I started the truck with the clutch in and the clutch is working. If I let it out the tires start spinning.

Any ideas what I could have don't to cause this?

91 F150 4.9 with the M50D tranny.

I think it may be because of the position of the shifter when we pulled it out. I don't know which gear it was in. Does anyone know how to manually set it to neutral?

Maybe I should ask this. Does anyone know if I can manually (without shifter) line up my gears to put it in neutral? I think that we were not careful when removing the shifter and it was in gear.

Shouldn't matter. it should just slide onto the shaft. For any gear the transmission is in, the shifter would have to be able to reach without binding, right?

I think you should check out the shifter collar, (the part where the stub that the shifter attaches to comes out of the top of the tranny) I'm thinking you may have accidentally damaged it while pulling or re installing.

All good!

All is good. Used a screwdriver and lined it up in neutral and everything went together perfectly.
