What do you mean by better than a granny 4 speed, in my book there is nothing tougher. A ZF is a step down from a T-18 or a NP 435. If you want overdrive then you can swap in a ZF or get an over-under drive unit.
i'm with you rocky, i just got ahold of an '89 that my old company i used to work for had and this thing has been a real piece of crap. i just put a new clutch in it and the throw out bearing is crying to get back out of there. this tranny has made all kinds of racket since brand new and this is the 8th clutch set in 253,000 miles. i'm not sure what it would cost to rebuild it, but i'm wondering if it would be possible (and easy) to swap in a auto. anyone here know?
tell me more fordman, i'm very interested in using this borg-warner as a trot line anchor. any specific years i should be looking for? do you know if there are any aftermarket floor shifters that can make the hook-up? i guess my best bet would be to find a junk truck and utilize all the parts off of it.
Well they are all pretty much the same throughout the years. The NP 435 is a little more lasting, but the T-18 is still a very tough tranny. They cam in 72-79 4 speed trucks. The T-18 has a cast cover, as where the Np 435 has aluminum covers. I have not found any aftermarket floor shifters. 2wd and 4wd trannies have different length tail shafts, so get the correct one to start off with. I junk truck would be the best bet, because you might need to move the crossmember for the tranny support, i do not know.
