Has anyone here tried to put the fancy auto dimming rear view mirror with the compass and temp display in their XLT? I really like these mirrors (aka gadgets) and am thinking about trying to track one down at a wrecker and install it. Just wanted to know if anyone out there had any experience, or if it was even posible, before I went out and spent the cash.

I have one of the 'auto-dimming' rear view mirrors in my '01 Chrysler LXi, and it is a neat gimmick (I'm also a gimmick fan), but for me it does not get dim enough when you need it. You can switch off the auto dim function, so it does not dim at night, if you need a clearer view, (hummm...is that a Highway Patrol back there?).
Ford offers an 'Electrochromic Compass Mirror' (with OAT) in their 2002 accessory catalog (MMS-37261), item # 128. I don't know the price, but I'm guess pricey.
If you do the conversion, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Especially running the wiring. I'm kind of intimidated about dropping the headliner (CrewCab).
Good luck in your search,

Yeah I checked out the accessory mirror from Ford, they want $350 Can. That's out of the question, but I thought if I could find one cheap somewhere I'd go for it.
Like you I don't want to go tearing into my headliner only to find out it can't be done. I was hoping someone here would be able to tell me if the wire is there or can be tapped into easily. I thought the neccessary connections might already be there since they have to run power to the overhead console and mirror in the Lariats. Looks like I might be the one boldly going where no man has gone before.
I just picked up an auto dimming mirror from a local wrecking yard. It cost me $10, but i knew the guy who sold it to me. You can probably get one at a yard for around $50.
