Was wondering if anybody has heard of this, I was getting a remote starter installed at a local car specialty shop and they were attempting to install the by-pass module so that the remote start would work without a key being placed in the dash. They couldn't program the by-pass module because the maximum number of keys had been programmed to my Expy. According to them, only six or eight keys can be programmed to a vehicle and to program that module I'd have to have the dealer clear the key memory or remove some of the entries in the memory to add in the by-pass module. Any body know anything about this??
Never heard of this concern. I guess not many have programmed 6 or 8 keys....I've only got the two originals. I keep meaning to get a third key just so I'll have the two required to program in the event I accidently lose one. Your best bet would be to call a dealership service dept and ask it what you were told is true.
I didn't know there was a limit either. Perhaps the original dealership (assuming you've never had it reprogrammed) had the maximum number made for their use?
If you need to get it reprogammed I wouldn't go to the dealer. Call around to the local locksmiths in your area. I recently had two keys cut (the dealership only had 1 key for our truck) and programmed at a local shop. The reprogramming part was $35 and it will take about 15 minutes or so because the computer has to cleared so they can reprogram it. They will put each key in one at a time and turn them from off to on and repeat the process alternating keys three times.
Please let us know how it turns out. I would like to know what this maximum # of keys is.
I remember reading that a maximum of 16 keys and up to 4 transmitters can be programmed to each truck. I think I read this in the owners manual, I will go out and look to confirm this!
