Code 31 EVP out of limits

Searched no luck...Is "code 31 the EVP out of limits" correct? I don't have the list of codes, no one has repair books around to sell. Went to AZ had them ck codes, got code 31 and 81. Got home did my own ck only got 31 code. Downloaded a list from Vincet Ciulla site, I hope these are good. I just used a bulb to ck codes. Prob. is what is the "EVP"?

I'll answer my own post, EVP is the EGR valve position sensor. Duh! I have been too tired here of late.

Its been awhile since ive delt with anything this old but if my memory serves me, code 31-35 delt with the EGR valve, the older 302 had kind of a weak EGR system that often just filled with carbon and never worked right anyway, but then they started puting sensors on everything so they could charge twice as much to diag.(hook up the scanner) at the dealerships. Code 31 is
the EVP/PFE OUT OF RANGE(USUALLY MENT THAT THE EGR VALVE WAS STUCK OPEN OR CLOSED) . The EVP stands for EGR VALVE POSITION SENSOR. The PFE stands for EXAUST BACKPRESSURE FEEDBACK SENSOR(I dont remember but I think this sensor didnt show up untill 86 or 87. As for code 81 Ill have to pass on that one. First I would pull the egr off and make sure it is not sticking, if it is working fine, next step would be the EVP sensor.

tritonking, Thanks for the post. I have been really tired lately with all I've got going on. This truck runs pretty good for a truck that has about 90% of its org. parts still on it from factory. I've been changing some for preventive maint. before I get stuck somewhere and have to walk a country mile to get back. Here lately it started to act up before I had a chance to get all of it done. I think it has a dirty EGR along with its sensor, it started to run hotter then normal, this makes me think it's the EGR valve and/or the sensor not able to range right.

Code 81 on the list I downloaded is Thermactor air bypass (TAB) circuit fault.

timken, yea I would say it is your egr, the hot exaust gases are staying in the motor , try cleaning your egr before replacing though... soaking in diesel works well, or gumout carb cleaner and a small brass brush.
