Question Torqueshift Transmission Service?

I'm wondering about how to go about draining the Torque converter on my new 2004 PSD with the new 5 speed transmission. The hand book say's to drain transmission pan and to change the remote filter. That is easy enough to do but is that all that is necessary. Normally On my F150's I have removed the plug in the converter to remove all the fluid. Also does the filter in the pan need to be changed. I would appreciate any information on this . Thanks, OzoneKiller

The trans should be serviced/evacuated in my opinion for the best results, otherwise this would leave the remaining fluid in the convertor..You "can" drain the pan and refill the trans, only remove the return cooling line and idle/pump out the used fluid..After a couple of times/fills, reinstall the line and continiue with the filter change..Not the best way but better than a "half" change in my opinion..

HAYAPOWER, So what you are saying is there is no plug in the torque converter and without a flushing system the only way is to idle the engine with the remote filter removed, and just keep adding fliud to flush it. That will probably cost about as much as having Ford do it. Plus I'm not sure I not sure I like The idea of running the engine to remove the fluid. Is this a normal practice?

No..Ford no longer uses a drain plug on their torque convertors. And a flush machine would be the "best" way to service your trans, but you "can" do it manually if you choose to..Yes..you will use some extra fluid but it would be offset in the price you'll pay at a service shop/dealer for the "retail" fluid they use, as well as "labor" for the work..

The way I look it is, that you can "either" just change the fluid in the pan/filter and do that at "very" regular intervales, or have it serviced at the recommended mileage and pay the price..Or change it manually "cycling" the remaining fluid out, and allowing the trans to pump/circulate the remainder out..More work and mess for sure than dropping it off at Ford, but cheaper in the long run I believe..You don't however, want to run the trans "dry", and only want to run out the remaining used fluid...I like to save where I can, and like to do my own work as well.....

Local dealer only charges $160 for this service. Considering this is every 30k, and importance to do it right, I'll be using them for this. I believe in saving a buck, but letting the dealer do it is money well spent.
