Off Roading Technique

Do you thuink it is better to go into a mud hole in 4x4, and engage the other mods as you need them, or to go in in 4x4, lockers locked, etc.?

well, if i had doubts about getting though to the other side without everything locked up i would definately lock up. when in mud holes it is nesicary to have momentum, and if you have to stop and lock everything up right in the middle of the hole, you have just put yourself in a bad situaltion and are likely not to get out anyway.

Well with my ARB I can engage it as long as there's no torque on the axle or different speeds between the front tires. If I go into a mud hole that I don't think I can get through easily in regular 4wd, I lock it, mash the gas, hit the mud hole and hang on

I just lock my hubs when I hit the trail. My axles are always locked whether I need them to be or not.

Lock hubs as soon as you leave the pavement, air down, plan route of attack, and lock diffs before going in. It's no fun to be sitting in the middle of the hole swearing at yourself because you got stuck!

Your not really supposed to engage things when wheels are spinning whether its 4Lo or engaging a locker. You should be ready when you hit the mud with momentum. If you are in a chevy call a tow truck in advance and if you are in a dodgie, pray.

yeah once you start, don't stop! Get all the ducks lined up ahead of time and go in shooting with both barrels.

same here! it all depends on the mud hole! I know i can make most holes around here in 2wd so i normally don't need but one hub locked, but if it looks hairy i go ahead and lock both!

it's all in what you are about to tackle!

Don't floor it if the situation doesn't call for it. There nothing worse than trying to get yourself unstuck with a busted Dana 60 Axle shaft, or possibly worse - Ive seen it too many times to condone it.

Hahaha. When in doubt . . . power out. If your axle shaft breaks it's time to replace it with something stronger.

Worst think people can do is STOP in the middle of a mud hole.

I concur.... with some of the stuff. Most of the mud holes I hit, Ive hit before, so I know what I need to engage and what not to engage.

Oh, thanks for telling me to get out and engage the hubs before, I never thought of that one....

Why is this even a question !? Lock everything you got up once you leave the pavement, aim, shoot, and nail the skinny pedal.
