just got done replaceing 302 to a 351w on my 86 f250..when we finnished, tranny had nothing to it...ie no gears..we changed filter..still nothing and we cant get the tranny to pump fluid through the lines to the cooler..we made sure tc was all the way back and blew out lines to cooler..how can we get the tc to fill without dropping the trans? and if we have to drop trans, besides reverifying tc all the way in what can we do as simple solutions. thanks ps if any questions about the swap ill try to help
ok here's the deal. after takeing out the tranny(again original that came with truck and 302 engine) we dissasembled the tranny and found that the pump in the tranny was worn around the gears against the cast part of the pump. reason? well the 302 flex, even though had the same amount of teeth as the 92 351w engine i bought, there was a slight diffrence. the 351w flex concaved out approx 1/4 inch further towards the tranny. which forced the original torque converter with the 302 to be pressed into the casting front of the pump and forceing the gears back into the rear casting of the pump and wearing grooves thus no pressure. tomorrow we go hunting for a trans front pump. thanks for replying this is again one of the many diffrences between the two engines and one of the many storys i could tell about the swap and the things that went right and not.
well the front pump will only cost me 35 bucks brand new through a tranny dealer not 180 through a ford dealership. soooo not that big of a deal luckly not snowing right now lol
well to remove the tranny took a period of time it all depends on the resources you have and if you have anyone helping. once the tranny is out (yes we also removed the transfer case to make it easyer to manipulate) it only takes 7 bolts on that tranny to remove the front pump (once bolts out insert two longer bolts to grab hold and pull out) the replacement is more or less the same with simply sliding the new pump in and tightening down the bolts alternatly to slowly work it in. all in all dealing with just the time for the pump mabey 1/2 hour total the rest well that takes more time
ok new problem now everything is in i have plenty of pressure, forward and reverse but it will not shift from first. i have tried what the transmission dealer recomended of adjusting the kick down (tv) cable to have 1/16th slack at throtle...(also acording to repair manual) but they also recomended that the govener may be laquered up (due to no tranny fluid for 2 days while it was apart) and to run the truck up to 25 mph and put it into park and let the tranny slow the truck down then long before it reaches 0 put back into drive and this process was to "free up the govener)...well doing this caused no wheel lock up or tranny lock up only slight whine in tranny. but still did not get the tranny to start shifting...now i have a tranny repair manual and now doing research. any tips from those with expericence would help
no vaucum modulator just a breather tube on this aod and bought a haynes tranns rebuild book for step by step. most likely its either the tv valve not adusted right or moving or govener valve locked up takeing today off will report exactly once we diagnose and fix tomorrow
OIC. I guess you swapped trannies- f250s normally come with C6s.. If its an AOD, it is probably the TV valve... At least, that would be the first place to look.
ok ...heres the duh...when i put a new filter in i managed to not put the square gasket on the new filter. thus causing it to suck air and foam.. also the tv valve (normaly with my connection) has a self adjusting spring for the tv cable...well doing as instructed does not set it at best for smooth shifting (once it started shifting and few drives to work itself out of all the air) and late kick down...so we have given it minor adjustments from there...tranny shop recomends with aod to set tv valve at 30 lbs of pressure at high output line...but we dont have pressure gage so doing minor adjustments will work too. no i didnt swap tranny..this is tran that was in the vehicle when i bought it...but it did have trans work prior to my purchase but can not ask prior owner what specificly was done to it
