Question Gear Question

Hey ya'll I was just wondering something.....here is what I have in store for my truck:

1) 6 inch Skyjacker lift
2) Going to 17 inch wheels
3) Running 37 inch BFG AT's

I just want to know wether or not I have to change my front and rear gears...if so what type gears should I go with? Thanks for all the help.

You dont have to change your gears, but I would highly recommend that you do. Look here for gears.

Good archived post on gearing in general.

You should only regear if you want better response and better gas mileage (tongue in cheek)

On my old F250 I had 38.5" Ground Hawgs on it and went with 4.56 gears. I had a 428CJ in it though so I had lots of power. Later I replaced that with a 351W and it was marginal for power. I think with the smaller engine that 4.88s would have been better.
Cowboy do you know what gears you have now?

Look at the axle code on the sticker in the door jamb or look at the tag on your rear end for the gear ratio.

Ok all here it is :

I do have 3.55 gears right now.

One last question, do you think that my truck with the 4.6 can handle going as big as I am thinking? I dont want to burn her out. If not, how big do ya'll think I should go while keeping the "big and mean" look. Thanks for the help ya'll.

I think 35's and a 6 inch lift would still give you the "look" you are going for and will not put too much strain on the 4.6l.

What was your stock tire size? if they were something like 235/75 16's (29" diameter), you may still want to go with 4.56 gear. If the stock tires were taller, you may be able to get away with 4.10's.
