I have a 03 v-10 4x4 crew cab 8 inch fabtech with 38 inch tires. The gears in it are 355's now what whould be a good gear to go with. I really dont climb much, but my acceleration is pretty bad.
With 38" tires you are roughly 8" bigger in diameter or about 25% bigger than the stock tires. This means that your actual power to the road is about 25% less. There are a lot of calculators on the web to tell you what gear ratios get you back to the same power at the pavement ( www.ring-pinion.com ). Remember though, you can't beat mother nature. You'll get power and acelleration back, but you'll lose top end speed.
Code3k9,
I have the same set up as you. This past weekend I changed the gears on my truck from the stock 3.73 to 4.88, much better response and power.
I was debating between 4.56 and 4.88 gears. I decided to put the 4.88, just in case I decide in the future to put bigger tires and lift.
Stock tires on a F250 with 3.73 is almost the same RPM as with 38 in tires with 4.56 gears.
Hope this helps.
Roger.

I don't think regearing effects the speedo either.
Look into the Superlift Truspeed module to do that.
If you really wanted to you could probably even run 5.13s.
Depends on what 38" tire you have to get a more accurate measure of the change to the effective gear ratio of your truck.......i.e. 38" TSLs are almost an inch smaller than a 38" PJ...and when calculating the change in RPMs every inch counts.
