I give up!!!!!!!!

I have the rear end out of a 78 super cab 4x4, i got the front with the yoke off,now why cant i get the other cover off the rear end?
it comes off the front of the rear end,but i cant see anything holding it.all i can see is the large gear on the driver side axle.
What am i missing?????????

thats just it lxman1,...i have no idea..lol
i see a few numbers on the front housing......which ones do i go by?? i have a chiltons manual,but i dont know which rear end i have?? any clue??
thanks for any help....

you need to pull the axels out first, then make sure you have all the nuts off around the front of the 3rd member. there is one on the bottom that is kinda hard to see, especialy if it is covered in grease and mud.

Sounds like you have a 9". These have no rear cover.

If it's in the truck in your sig line, it's a 9" rear. You have to pull the axle shafts first. Jack the truck up and put it on jack stands, remove the rear tires, remove the brake drums, remove the 4 nuts(per side) holding the axleshaft in, pull the axle shafts, remove the 10 nuts on the center section, remove the copper washers under the nuts (use a chisel), place a drain pan under the center section, re-install 2 of the nuts, just threaded onto the studs (so you don't drop the center on yourself), use a thin chisel to break the seal between the center section and the housing, let the oil drain for an hour or so, remove the 2 nuts that were re-installed earlier, then remove the carrier. It's heavy, so be carefull and use a floor jack to lower it to the floor. If you need, I can take some pictures of one of my 9" rears to help you out.
