Re Socal Desert Rider's message- I did indeed have a typo on gear ratio-it is 3.31 on my truck, which is great for mileage and miserable for towing. I agree with his assessment of changing gear ratios- but only if the truck is 2 wheel drive, since the front drive has a built in gear ratio on a 4x4. I did rent another truck for a week with a 3.55 axle , auto tranny and 4.6 engine- much better towing capability but poor gas mileage, about 4 mpg less driving empty on the Highway. I still think the 5.4 motor is miles ahead of the 4.6 for towing - it gets 90% of it's maximum torque at low rpm's, so it is strong over a wide powerband, unlike the 4.6, which is a Mustang motor, getting most of its pulling power at high rpm's.
