Machines are more resiliant than you'd think. Only time I was scared was installing memory in a 4 way compaq ml570. On my desk with it plugged in for grounding. I had the map and strap but still. Then I looked at the PO for 4 gigs of ram for that thing. Our shop has handled plenty of boxes hundreds, never lost anything to esd.
I stick to my guns, replace it. 600mh thats like 4 years or so. Hardware fails on a bathtub curve. for pc's it is 30 days and about 4 years. good luck
The computer is still working, but it may be time to get a second one anyways. My wife is planning on going to school in the fall and I was thinking of getting her a Laptop.
What should I look for???
Also, what is "esd"? I am becoming Computer retarted as these things are getting to advanced, and I am only 24.
ESD is Electro Static Discharge. This can damage computer hardware. However I've handled many machines without protection with no I'll effects.
Personally I would call dell and ask what types of refurb boxes they have in your price range. If you want to play games you will need a graphics card and a 1 gig of ram. If all you do is surf the web you can get by with on board graphics and 512mb of memory. They usually have word and xp home preloaded. If you think your wife may need excel for school you may need to buy it. Most universities offer huge discounts on software to students.
Dell has good support and good hardware. Don't buy a machine from best buy or walmart or something.
I have had more windows problems than I care to remember, and yesterday was the straw that broke the camel's back.. I threw out windows.. So now I have a reliable operating system that has not hung, wobbled, or otherwise objected.. The Operating System is Linux. For someone that only goes onto the internet, Linux seems ideal - It comes complete with two browsers (Mozilla, and Konqueror) the office suite from Open Office, and a a truck load of audio video players.. So far I have only had it running since last evening, but generally, Windows would have done something odd in that timeframe, and Linux has not. I think I am sold on it, and would recommend anyone fed up with the instablility of windows should give it a try.
Here's a link for shutdown problems. Look for windows ME specific items- I don't know your system so I can't be more specific on the possible solution.
Totally agree with Theo, but if you're not inclined to go that route, upgrade to XP or 2000 Professional. Just back up all your data and do a CLEAN install rather than "upgrade" over the existing ME operating system. You can do a full clean install from an "upgrade" disk because you have a prior version on your system.
I bought linux enterprise 3, the commercial version for $90 at CompUSA... You can download a free version at www. debian.org.. The download needs you to have a CD burner, the purchase comes with it loaded, on 9 of them.
For a pure user, this os is completely stable.. Unfortunately I have hacker genes, so am messing around trying to figure out how it works..
