what brand do you guys prefer? for my graduation present i am getting a laptop. i am in the process of looking for one, so far i have looked at dell,hp, and alienware. any opinion and experiences will be deeply appreciated.
This question is pretty much a matter of personal preference. Each of us have different preferences. I have used several different brands of laptoops in my work and personal life. Each has advantages and disadvantages. I currently have a Sony Viao which serves me well. That is not to say that it is any better than a Dell or Gateway or others. It is simply a machine that works well for my uses.
I'd say determine your needs and wants, shop around and buy whatever fits your needs and budget.
The only brand I can tell you to stay away from is Gateway, there customer service reps are second to none (litterally, bottom feeders), and the few people I know of used up there 2 years of free housecalls in about 6 months.... This was only 3 or 4 people tho.. so how they fare elseware I do not know.... I know that the people that I know that have owned or own gateway will never buy another one.
I replaced our companies entire pc infrastructure with IBM desktops and laptop hardware. Thousands of them.
Both are prone to failure rates higher than industry average. Simple regression analysis. It is all made in china crap. I'm typing this on an x24 think pad now. To small to expensive. You can get more bang for your buck elsewhere. Its HD failed a year or so ago along with plenty others IBM quoted a 3 month part replacement time because of sars. They refused to replace the entire unit, amazing. We are a multi million dollar account. Had to go through our account rep in NY to get them right.
Now if we were talking about RISC based computing like rs/6000's my comments would be very different.
I live in Creedmoor.
I believe IBM "subcontracts" it's pc and laptop lines out to SE Asia. Our problems were with battery failures and HD failure. However my machine has been dropped by the TSA twice and forgotten for two days in a car in PHX in 116 degree heat. It still runs like a champ.
Their enterprise machines are great.
Good luck on the flight. I'll open up my email in my profile.
I would bet the farm on Compaq's DL380 and ML5x server lines. I have these machines running windows 2000 and assorted applications, some crappy I might ad, for 2 years with 99.99+ uptime. They are fault tolerant, well built, and when I have had to call service for something it was handled professionally. They are simple powerful and you can't beat them for 2u rack mounted machines.
