I have run into some trouble in my steering column.Yes its 3 on the tree. I cant shift. Its like its jammed or something. What i would like to do is move it to the floor but dont know how. If you havent figured it out yet I don t know squat about vehicles 'cept how to drive and simple maintance. I dont even know where to start. What kind of shifter should i look for? Is there like a kit for it? Have you done it and been sucessful?I will listen to any advice given . Thanks
Parts are likely still available for column shift rebuild. I would check motorhaven or other aftermarket sources. Might be cheaper and easier. The good floor shifters are kinda pricey. My .02 Ron
It could be an easier fix than that. Sometimes my friends truck with the 3spd on the column would bind up, all U have to do is go under the truck to the transmision the 2 shift levers should be both vertical, if they are not pull them tell they are. Make sure to block the tires when U do this or U will get pretty scared if the truck starts to roll away with You underneith.
If you want to try and adjust that shifter like Joe says above it's really easy to do. Put the truck in neutral and loosen the bolt on the tranny levers that have the slots in them. Look under your hood where the column comes out through the firewall and you'll see the 2 shift arms. They each have a hole through them that will line up with a notch on the column itself when the shifter is in neutral. Slide a drill bit in there to hold the shifter dead centered neutral, and tighten the 2 bolts back up on the tranny shift levers. Might want to take a look at the nylon shifter bushings while you are working on it too. Having a little play in them can throw things off quick, and they are cheap and easy to replace! By the way, if your shifter gets jammed in the truck it's easier to get it back out of gear usually by working the rods out under the hood around! Just make sure the truck is blocked and and won't roll away on ya!
