Newbie alert! I've just ordered a 2004 F250XL Super Duty 4X4 Crew Cab 172-in wb (8 foot bed) - V10, stick, power nothin'. I'm trying to research basic camper shells on-line, without a whole lotta luck. My needs are pretty basic, I'd rather save a few bucks than get fancy. If I need to go white, or buy with primer & paint myself, that's fine. Have a couple of questions, for anyone who cares to oblige. Where can I find a unbiased comparison of basic shells that will inform me about relative prices and features? Couldn't I use a universal 8-foot aluminum shell, and doesn't any one make these anymore? Are junkyards a good source for used shells, or are the caps typically separated before a truck reaches its final resting place? My BIL has had a series of RAM pickups and has used the same shell on all of them (8 years). He bought it for $25 from an old coot who had it on a Chevy P/U. I know I won't find that kind of deal, but it shows the direction I'd like to go. Thoughts? (other than those doubting my sanity - get enough of those at home;>) Thanks in advance.
Super Duty's have a taller cab than most other trucks,, I found this out when I put my pickup camper on it rested on the roof , I had too put 2 sheets of plywood on top of the box liner . So between the liner and plywood I needed over 2.5 inches ... Fred
Not to offend, you but after shelling out a lot of money for your truck why cheap out on a cap. Get one painted to match and 1-2 years from now you won't regret it
First of all Vans, I'll put the Hawk up against the Leer any day. The Hawk has a thicker roof and stronger sides. I put a Con Fer rack on mine and I can stand on it without any problems. Secondly, why would anyone pay that much to have it colored when you can spray it yourself and do a better job for 1/4 the cost (thats with House of Color paint and clear too)? The fit and finish of the Leers on the lot were not good quality. I looked at 8 diferent leer shells and there were obvious defects on 5 of them. Do what you want, it's your money, that was the point of the post and my .02. I know without a doubt that thousands of people have Leers and love them. I am happy with my Hawk and it fits my needs better than the Leer.
