fan shroud problems

In my 56 f 100, i cant get the fan to match up anywhere close to the shroud. When the shroud is mounted up, the fan sits nearly 4 inches lower than the bottum of the shroud. I need help quick so i can get the front end assembled!!! Do i maybe have the wrong shroud? All the bushungs on the radiator and the motor mounts are new. THanks

I feel you pain man, see my similar post.

But I think you may have a couple inches travel on the fan upwards in height if you get a longer fan belt? Or are you at the top of the tension range already?

Hi

Ok it appears that you don't have the truck fan mounting system. I am looking at my 56 repair manual and it shows a crank pulley with two gooves.
The one closest to the block drives the generator and water pump.

The outer one drives the fan which is mounted off of a bracket that appears to be mounted on the top of the water pump

Which in effect raises the fan maybe 6 inches and moves it forward perhaps a like amount.

So the bottom line, You need the correct mounting bracket and crank pulley for the truck installation or you will need to fab a new shroud. I have no idea where you can get a bracket.

Good Luck

Chuck

midnight cruiser-I dont really understand how you can have any range in fan height since the fan is mounted so that there is no adjustment. The adjustment for the belt comes from the tensioner on the generator. Maybe im misunderstanding you though.

Merc- I know what you mean about the two belt setup. However, thes setup was only used on trucks that had the 302 and 332 engines. The 292 and the 272 engines both had one belt that ran the generator, the crank and the water pump. The more i get to thinking about it though, I had to buy another fan shroud bc i lost one of mine. I wonder if there is a difference in the fan shrouds from the 302 engines to the 292 engines? I might just have the wrong shroud.
THanks for both of you inputs.

If you check the thread I started today, you will see talk that trucks had double crank pulleys. One of my belts (next to block) runs the generator, the other goes up to the fan. THe fan shaft base slides vertically in a slot in the water pump casting, and has 2 slots to pick up 2 bolts to fix its position and tension the belt.

Sounds like you have a different setup. Was this the original truck motor?

Looking at the parts manual for the 48 to 56 ford trucks, the 56 with the 272 and 292 was the only ford motor between these years to use the single belt setup. In 56, the 302 and the 332 used a dual belt, unless they had a thermostatically controlled fan. Here is a pic of what the 56 with a 272 or 292 should look like.

Thumbs up

Are you sure that you have the correct year shroud? I'm not sure, but I think that '56's are different from 54-55's. The 54-55 had the fan mounted above the water pump on a seperate bracket and probanly had a higher hole in the shroud. I think that the 56 fan was mounted on the water pump and the hole in the shroud is lower. At least thats the way mine is, but it may not be original.

From this discussion and your photos I'm sure you need another fan shroud. You have no vertical adjustment because your fan is mounted direct to the water pump, only forward adjustment if you add a spacer. Can you possibly turn your existing shroud 180 degrees and gain anything?

Hi

Yeah the book said the light duty trucks ran a fan off of the water pump (seen that after I sent the note) but the somewhat stock 56 here in town (suppost to be a 292 I think) has the raised fan.

I bought a original fan shroud from Gibbons truck parts a few years ago and they did say something about the I6 being different then the V8 but then again that could have been a sales pitch

Looking at the side view of your engine the fan just seems so low compared to the radiator it seems like the raised fan would work.

Looks like you are going to have a winner when you are finished.

The I6 and V8 shrouds were different in '55. I would have to check a book on '56 but would bet it too was different.

To keep this thread material in one good spot- I was questioning my 312s distance from the shroud I bought .

1. my shroud is very different than the '56 pictured in this thread- the 56 looks to be a 2 part fabrication. Mine is only as deep as the radiator side of this one.

Still looking for a 54-55 Y truck fan & shroud shot- help!

2. I definitely have the old style truck water pump/fan/2pulley setup so the fan sits higher than that 56.

B]But the fan is 18" dia and the shroud has a 16" opening.[/B]

Is the shroud wrong, and/or
is the fan too big?
