I need some help from you Superduty veterans. I rolled past 3000 miles this past weekend and since I was visiting my parents (600 miles from home) I went ahead and had the oil changed at a quick change place. They changed the oil and put in 5w20 like Ford recommends. My question is this: When they changed the oil they put in 6.5 quarts. The book calls for 5.7 (6 quarts). Will this be okay or will it hurt the truck? I am not a mechanic so this might be a stupid question. I just don't want anything to happen to my baby! Thanks for your help.

Always use the dipstick as a rule (guide).unless you know that it's inaccurate.(in past some have been)
if it's overfilled it can cause damage to seals because of of crankcase
preasure.
I don't know the recommended amount with filter change on a v-10
could you have read the manual wrong?

The manual calls for 6.0 quarts with a filter change. Even though
those quickee oil jobbies have a counter on there oil rig it is
not an exact science but the little overage is okay as on there
counter unless there dial is calibrated to exact numbers.
The best range for changing is min of 3000 miles not to excedd 5000.
Of course there are othere's that would tell you differently.
The usual F250 Superduty 4X4 ext cab, long bed , k&n filtercharger,

I know the manual calls for 6. But when I change it, 6.5 puts it a smidgen below the end of the hash marks. It doesn't hurt anything unless overfilled by a quart or more. SOme would argue that I should save the .5 quart for the next change and after a while I'll have enough for a "free" oil change. Nothing wrong with that thinking, I just like the oil level to be where it is...
Over filling will cause oil starvation due to the crank draggin through the oil & frothin' it up, along with the possible seal rupture problems that Rich mentioned.
If the "quickie" place did it, did they charge you for the extra .5 qt? I sure as heck wouldn't pay for it. Show them the manual next time...just to be a PITA.
I just changed my oil at 1K today, (Put in Mobil 1). Anyway, the six quarts left me about half a quart short of the top hash mark. So 6.5 would sound about right to me, but that's just me.
I ran into the same issue. The manual says 6 qts. The dealer says 6.5 qts. FORD customer service says the service manual is general. Follow the dealer's recommendations. When I changed my oil, 6 qts. brought it to the middle of the dipstick marks. An extra half quart brought it to the max. line. I don't think you can go wrong with either. Good luck.
Anyone here who changes their own oil and does their own other maintenance ever had a problem trying to prove that you stayed "on track" with the service intervals when going to the dealership? I use the service log that came with the owner's manual and put the receipts and everything in there, but I wonder if I ever make a claim if they will try to get out of warranty work because I didn't go to them for service.
Ichange my own oil in my vehicles all the time because I don't trust those yahoos at the Quickie joints. My dealer said that as long as I keep my receipts for the oil and filter that I bought they would honor my warrenty. So when it is time for an oil change I just buy the oil I need with a filter and write everything down in my owners manual and throw the receipt in with it. I figure thats all I can do. Godd Luck.
